And it always seems because we think they run warm.  Seems much rarer to get one questioned on the cool side.

I haven't seen any run obviously cold in a while on MADIS. I think AFN did way back in the day for a time but it was corrected pretty quickly. I recall them being like consistently 4F colder than ORH one winter which is way too high given very similar elevation.

Ive always found the issues are much easier to find in the winter versus the summer. The summer has a lot of additional outside factors that winter doesn't have which can muck up temps.

I still think it’s home stations getting better. Many have fan aspiration now and live in the countryside with a lot more shade and evapotranspirational cooling. 15 years ago the mesos were the torch spots... now it’s the airport sites.

I could see that.  A decade ago you’d look at the PWS maps and they’d be littered with torching thermometers.  A sunny day of 90F at ASOS sites would show a smattering of 95-98F PWS scattered around.  Those maps are much more consistent now...more uniform with less of those obviously torched home stations.

Looks like ORH managed to do a 1.8* spike/drop in the span of 20 minutes to get an 89.6.  Must have been Jetblue passing by.

Where were you all afternoon? It's rounding limitations of the 5min obs.

Was probably just 88...89...88

No urban heat islands at 945ft in NE CT either.

Yeah I could see it doing that on some. I don't believe that is the reason for the BOS drift though IMHO. That one was way more noticeable when it happened because it was running a lot different than other ASOS stations in uniform conditions like snow events...so we weren't even comparing it to Davis stations.

lol.  You should try to find a site’s 1-min obs...they’ll be all over the place.

I used to look at them at Stowe on the Snowmaking system and in a span of like 10 minutes the temp would be all over.  Could be 67F then drop to 63F then back up to 66F, then 64F then back to 67F... and averaged it all just shows up as obs of 65F and 65F.

Yeah...I think we agree on that. The rapid shifts are a bigger problem than the amount of error itself.

Has anyone gotten a peek at the ASOS at Logan lately? Did they put black mulch around it?

Hard to argue with that MADIS shift at BOS.  It just woke up one week and decided to start verifying 2F too warm.

BDL actually hit 104F on that all-time record day of 103F in 2011. But the 5-min averages are the official reading.
