I'm debating with someone who claims NYC never had tornadoes until recently (which I know is not true) but it is hard to find data out there. I find that hard to believe. I will do some more research tonight but I believe there were more. Pre 1985 it may have just not been reported. That's what happening with the whole tornado alley moving east thing. There's always been tornadoes but more people are out there spotting and chasing so they can confirm visually.
