Might actually even be like $12 - $14 per pack. My aunt quit in the early 90's I think she said. they were only a few dollars per pack...she said when she would be out at the bar sometimes she would go through 3 in a night. But I think it's disgusting how the government is able to get away with just increasing and implementing these taxes...I guess maybe b/c the industry is too powerful to be shut down(?) and so it's a method installed in hopes people will quit b/c they can't afford it or whatever...idk but to just make money off of people's addictions. We were talking cities specifically, not states as a whole. But yes I see how that translates to scale. I still stand by my comment. If you go north, MA cities like Lawrence, Brockton, North Adams etc. are probably no better than CT's worst concerning HDI. Could be wrong.. HoarfrostHubb
For me personally I would choose CT 6th if I were to want to move to a New England state. Just my druthers. I’m sure there are very nice parts of CT and I used to work there a bit. Just not my cup of tea

There's nothing exciting there unless your down by NYC and then your paying through the roof. And it's bad for snow and not near the mountains. I love NE Ct, average 55 plus, love SECT especially Stonington Mystic. Half hour from the worlds two biggest casinos with 60 something top restaurants, endless top entertainment etc etc., half hour to the top beaches in NE. You live in interior Mass lol, now if you lived in NNE I could see your point.
A Moonlit Sky
I think the point is that CT is a microcosm of New England as a whole. The issue, however, is that it doesn't do any of those things in an excellent way that makes them stand out. I love CT. It's a lovely state and punches above its weight in terms of cultural amenities--but it certainly does have something of an identity issue. Back in my blackjack days, I would take 395 down to Foxwoods from ORH all the time...very pretty area eastern CT is...and so is much of the western half too in my travels out there. Biggest problem for the state is that it has fiscally mismanaged itself into a lot of trouble and they are trying to tax their way out of it which drives away businesses and residents. I'm sure they'll turn the tide eventually on that front...they just need to give people a reason to move there again from neighboring states. A renaissance of sorts in economic factors would certainly help.
tamarack
1 hour ago, Ginx snewx said: How many got booze? That was a much bigger issue than smoking back in the stone age when I was in HS. Our school had 1,000+ students and I don't think I ever noted more than 8-10 at the school-established smoking wall. However, we were a 30-minute drive from Greenwood Lake, NY where the drinking age was 18, with NJ requiring 21. Lots of draft card loaning for ID purposes. Also, more than a few wrecks/injuries/fatalities as inebriated youngsters tried to navigate homeward. Our community beach had a tradition of being "decorated" by pranksters the night before Labor Day, and one year they managed to load a huge tire (as in 8' tall, big "Butler Tire" painted on its side) from a dealership 3-4 miles away, flopped it in the middle of the beach, and filled it to overflowing with beer cans scavenged from the main route to the NY bars. Property tax here is about $11 per $1000 of value and I'm right on the CT-NY state line about 12 miles from NYC as the crow flies. This NYC 'burb may have the lowest property tax in the state. Not as cheap as some Mass. towns like out on the Cape or Nantucket, but lower than most places in Mass., and way cheaper than the other side of the border in Westchester County. Lower taxes, very safe well maintained and clean communities, some of the best public schools around, full services, and a relatively quick 40-60 minute train ride into Grand Central. Also a good job market if you don't feel like commuting.

CoastalWx
MA is full steam ahead economy wise, but with one serious...looming issue. It's getting congestion increasing at an accelerating rate. Old highway systems, large growing population with the help of companies/startups embedded in the BOS area, along with MBTA reputation really causing us to look in the mirror. Sure every large metro area has its issues, but metro BOS faces a growing concern with traffic and work/life balance of the people who live and work in the region. Honestly though....the region otherwise is fantastic. Top of the line in every category.
