Do you have private contractors that fix the radar itself or is it NOAA tech staff? The initial diagnosis is done by our electronic technicians (every NWS office has a small team of them), then depending on that they will work with specialists with the Radar Operations Center (in Oklahoma). If the problem is severe enough, those specialists are dispatched to the radar site to investigate further. All techs are NOAA/NWS employees. 1
BBasile
12 hours ago, MGorse said: Lol. Unreal thread here! Anyway, the radar failure that occurred is significant. To replace the parts that failed takes a team of specialists from Oklahoma as they have the resources and man power to get it done. The replacement parts have to be shipped to the radar site, then extensive work has to be done including lifting up the entire radar pedestal and dish inside the radome. And remember the radar is not at the NWS office, it is on the property of Joint Base. What broke you ask, I will just say the radar will not turn AT ALL. The last update we got is for the radar to be back online during the week of May 20th. We are not happy about the failure either but it is what it is. Thanks for the update. Sucks not having KDIX, but at least our area is saturated with radars, relative to most of the rest of the country.

I was told the last time this problem occurred was 10 years ago. This radar was doing well for quite awhile. People forget the radars when up are running 24/7 which adds to the wear and tear. A second phase upgrade to our radar is scheduled I believe for March 2020.

blue sky
This radar should work 24/7. If not...Nws should not have it as their official radar. When it works it is awesome! But it breaks all the time. Current break is really long. Lots of rain and storms right now.

Should be fixed soon. I have a 6pt socket rather than a 12pt and additional hardware which should do the trick. Current temp 47F/rain....pretty sure rain tomorrow as well.

Apparently you cannot understand the severity of this failure. Lots of work to get it repaired.

I think there is often a lack of awareness of the size of these doppler radars. I remember following the Hurricane Maria thread when Maria tore through P.R. and almost obliterated TJUA - Before - After (the dish was completely gone) - It took 9 months to bring it back online.
