Mesoscale Discussion 0952
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0457 PM CDT Sun Jun 02 2019

Areas affected...Eastern Virginia into the Delmarva Peninsula

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

   Valid 022157Z - 022330Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...Numerous storms in central Maryland and north central
Virginia have produced severe hail for the past couple of hours. A
new severe thunderstorm watch may be needed downstream of watch 315
   and 318.

DISCUSSION...A combination of multicell and occasional right and
left moving supercell thunderstorms have developed in north central
Virginia and central Maryland over the past few hours. The
environment ahead of these storms is characterized by around 1500
J/kg of MLCAPE and mid-level lapse rates around 7 C/km per RAP
mesoanalysis. In addition, the LWX VWP shows around 30 knots of
mostly unidirectional deep layer shear. This parameter space will
continue to support both left and right moving storms with a primary
threat of large hail with some damaging winds possible as well.

A combination of ongoing convection drifting east-southeast out of
the current watch area and new development on the southern flank of
these storms may necessitate a new severe thunderstorm watch south
and east of watch 315 and 318. The southern extent of the threat is
uncertain. Primarily unidirectional westerly flow would suggest
storm propagation mostly to the east, but guidance suggests
thunderstorms will continue to develop southward with the cold
front. However, by the time any storms arrive in far southern
Virginia, the boundary layer may start to stabilize and limit the
   intensity of these storms.

Whoa, lots of hail just started in Germantown

Are you there?  What part?  I am 2 mile NE Germantown in the Milestone area, and have whiffed on everything again.  Saw purple on radar 2-3 miles north from one cell, then 2 miles south with this one.  Got nothing more than a brief shower.

I'm curious to know what those storms were like in Germantown and Gaithersburg - they looked wild on radar.

I live near the Chipotle in the town center. Pretty cool, pea sized hail

Fair amount of tree damage in Columbia again. I can't remember a stretch of severe like this in a VERY long time.

Lost two ~3” limbs off my sycamore plus lots of smaller branches. Strongest winds from any storm this year.

Holy hell! Whatever just blew threw Elkridge was fun!  No thunder or lightning which is weird, but damn it ripped hard for a bit. Loved it!

Yeah I was just getting some very distant rumbles and then the sky opened up and the wind got going. Pretty good storm with no T&L.

Best storm in years IMBY in terms of wind + rain.  Started with a bit of T&L but then just pouring sheets of rain for a solid 30 minutes and quite windy for a solid 10-15 mins (it felt longer).  Tropical storm-like during the 10-15 mins of strong winds.  About 3/4"-1" rain.  Temp dropped from 84 to 71 during storm.
