What's interesting is that DJF of the 2000's was top 3, but the november, march and April of the same decade was bottom 3.

We don't get early or late snow anymore.

.Snow depth is a great way to measure a winters severity...

After 1995 Central Park didn't record snow depth...I believe they started to record it again in 2006...I had to use La Guardia Airport observations a few years...A few numbers were estimated because of missing information or wrong info...These Snow depth days are days when some snow was on the ground at any time during the day...Max snow depth could have been a few inches more in some cases because of melting or compacting before the next 24hr observation...

The period covers 15 days...The 15 day period must have an average temperature of 32.0 or lower with at at least 10" of snowfall...Not every winter gets one...Some big storms in the past are not included because it wasn't cold enough....March 58 and January 64 are two examples...Most years have a period when the temperature averages 32.0 or lower...Many years had 10" in 15 days...These are the years that had both...Last year had two...

Snow depth days...

2009-10 was a snowy winter but other winters with less snow had more days with it on the ground...Snow depth is a great way to measure a winters severity...

After 1995 Central Park didn't record snow depth...I believe they started to record it again in 2006...I had to use La Guardia Airport observations a few years...A few numbers were estimated because of missing information or wrong info...These Snow depth days are days when some snow was on the ground at any time during the day...Max snow depth could have been a few inches more in some cases because of melting or compacting before the next 24hr observation...

Trace days are days when a trace of snow was recorded or a trace was on the ground...Total days 1"-20" also...

Lack of trace days in recent years makes me think a few are going undetected... Years ago snow depth was to the tenth of an inch...Later in one inch increments...This year as bad as it was isn't the hardest winter we ever had...We did see four different times when there was 10" on the ground...8 days total...The most since 1995-96...We have a trace on 45 days so far...29 days with an inch or more and 12 straight...23 days with 4" or more...We might add to this years totals before it's finally over...

1993-94 has the most 1" days...Most trace days and consecutive trace days...

1947-48 had the most consecutive 1" , 4" and 10" days...

so far today is the tenth straight day with at least 4" of snow depth for the winter in NYC...We managed seven days with 10"...The years since 1947-48 with the most days...

Back to back snowy winters...

The average snowfall for the 19 snowy winters is 53.8"...The average for the following winters was 27.8" which is around the long term average...The biggest snowfall average for the snowy years is 13.7" while the following years averaged 9.8"...Not shabby numbers for the following winters...Eight of the nineteen winters that followed snowy ones had much below average snowfall...Eight had above average snowfall...16 of the nineteen snowy winters had storms 10" or more...10 of the following 19 winters had 10" plus storms...1963-64 and 1964-65 are the only official nino/nina winters...before 1950 maybe 1919-20 and 1920-21...
