It was 2002-03 through 2015-16 we had the big HECS.

Definitely, I just vividly recall and appreciate that specific window of winters. I liked the extended cold in some of the later winters of that block.

Pretty sure it was 2014, but I have vivid memories of significant pack retention down here for weeks and weeks.

I do really enjoy the cold periods nearly as much as the snow (I know most don’t), if we could just get a little snow on the ground early this Jan with this temp profile … man not bad, you know? Such a shame.

  • 3 weeks later...

20 years since the blizzard of 2005. A great underrated storm that dumped 12 to 18" with higher amounts east and even saw blizzard conditions the following morning as the low bombed off the coast

Temps were around 10 at the start and the snow came in like a wall with 8 hours of S+

I spent much of it driving back from a basketball game in Philly and it was surreal being on 95 with almost no other cars

Was just reminiscing about 1/29/22 as we approach the end of the month, that was such an epic and fun storm for both myself and the LI crew.

The only thing that knocks it down a peg for me is the fact that the storm needed to shift west like 50-75 miles and most of the metro would’ve been absolutely blasted, and we would all be fondly reminiscing about that absolute beast of a storm. The city did fine, but there’s a big difference once you start to go over a foot in terms of memorability, of course.

That was so close to a much needed forum wide KU, it hurts in hindsight given our current position. And that was such a cold storm, 22F at time of peak snowfall down here, (I think) we could’ve easily handled a much closer track without tainting the coast / LI. In a way, that was the one that got away of recent memory, at least IMHO in terms of huge upside potential.

Wow, that's insane. How much snow is that? Looks like a winter of yore, but it's only 14 years ago.

10-11 was the best winter for snow depth in my life, and I lived on the south shore at the time. It was absolutely epic just a few miles inland pretty much where they avoided warm air intrusions better. 1/26-27/11 was one of my all time favorites with epic snow rates overnight and thundersleet to kick it off.

It was up to my first floor windows here!  I remember when the storm resumed, with an offshore tornado and thundersleet!

It looked like the Poconos here with so much snow on the ground.

probably our last 18" storm

Nowhere near 18 inches here.  Haven't had an HECS here since January 2016.

January 2018 was very good, but about half of that amount of snow. It's why I call it semi-Jonas.

4-8 SECS

8-16 MECS

16-24 HECS

24+  BECS

That's my modified scale, I added a higher top end thanks to January 2016.  There needs to be a category above HECS

January 2018 was about 15 inches here so just under HECS.  January 2022 was 12 inches here.

Oh nevermind I thought this was for February 1983 this is the anniversary of that storm.... PD2's anniversary is next week.

Back then the local weather would've been the original basic white techie all caps font on a dark blue / purple  background,  except of course in the case of a WSW when you'd get the beautiful warning tone, the red screen, and the scroll.  Man this evokes A Christmas Story like memories for me.
