gravitylover
LB, how old were you in 1978? You can't just go off numbers, the impact was tremendous, my neighbor didn't get home for two days after and my street didn't get plowed for 4 days. We were all out there shoveling so people could get home after being stranded for a day or two. We had a two rail fence in our front yard, the top rail was about 32" off the ground and the snow nearly covered the upper section while the lower, more exposed section, had about 3" of post exposed below the top rail. It was a massive storm that really beat the place up.

I remember shoulder bagging from relay box to relay box. After surviving that experience I knew I would last, at least, until my 80’s. A brutal storm. At JFK we had 12 straight hours of true blizzard conditions in Jan 2016, which is why I'll always rank that far ahead of every other snowstorm and over 30 inches of snow, more than twice what they got in February 1978. We do best here in strong el ninos (Feb 1983, PD2, Jan 2016)....Jan 1996 being the exception of course (we also do well in la ninas that come after el ninos). 26" at ISP in 2/78, similar elsewhere around the island. 2016 wasn't anywhere near twice as much snow at JFK as 1978. Different measuring techniques. And a few miles east of JFK in 78 had 20". The closest thing to '78 was 2/8/2013. Similar snowfall in spots, but less on average and with a lot less wind. uncle W
1978 it was a great storm in Brooklyn and that February 1978 did not have a drop of rain...only snow fell...the January 78 big storm was almost as big on my block...that was wiped out by a big cutter with rain four days later...Early March 78 was another storm that had sleet mixed in...it was a great slow starting winter...

gravitylover
Yeah that January storm turned into a memory too quickly but I was able to live vicariously through the LE reports out of Buffalo. They got dumped on a couple of times a week from early Jan through mid Feb when the lake finally froze. I even wrote a paper for school titled "If I had 16 feet of snow" and got a really good grade (for a change).

All I remember about 1978 is a lot of white outside and icicles hanging just outside my window, I lived in Brooklyn at the time near Prospect Park. I don’t know where to start in praising your video archive of snow events. It would be nice if if the forum had a method of storing them for retrieval any time of the year, when needed. I will show this one to my two young Brooklynite grandsons. It sure ignites pleasant memories of my old Dyker Heights/Bensonhurst neighborhoods. From the seed pods ( itchy balls ) on the Sycamore to The quarter century plus vehicles to the finale with a young Joe Bastardi reporting on 10/10. He would often scan an ancestor/pre-cursor of this forum that DT posted on. That forum, sadly self destructed. Thank you Unc for opening the gate. I will continue strolling down the lane enjoying the memories. As always …

CPcantmeasuresnow
Maybe someone can verify this for me, but according to my records the 8.3 inches of snow recorded in Central Park from the January 28-29 storm becomes the 100th storm of 8.3 inches or more in NYC since records have been officially kept since 1869.
