I think 97-98 was the fluke....the examples of great south shore 20 plus inch HECS includes Feb 1983 and Jan 2016, both of which were amazing here. I'm going by JFK numbers, where 82-83 was the snowiest season between 77-78 and 93-94 and the only one with over 30 inches of snow in that period and in 2016 we had over 40 inches of snow.

This storm was def better. I think I ended with about a foot in babylon.

It seems like Jan 96/ PD2 type storms are getting more rare.  Was Jan 2016 really good by you?  That might be the last widespread great storm I remember (although our northern neighbors got screwed there).

Yes. 2’ at MMU. Last year was almost a carbon copy of that over me.

now thats MY perfect storm, I loved it and we both did extremely well in it, not only that my other house did extremely well in it too...30 inches plus at Allentown and JFK and everywhere in between (in a straight line)

I had to drive thru Midwood to get to work that morning...no one was on the roads but me so it wasn't a bad drive except for a street being closed due to a tree falling over...many a pine tree and bush looked deformed that Spring...

How does it compare to Jan 1994? I cant imagine anything bigger than that.  Can you compare freezing rain amounts for both storms and duration at JFK as well as temps?

my block had more sleet than say JFK...I had a girl friend in east NY and the Howard Beach area was mostly freezing rain...1-2" thick...there was no power failures as far as I can remember...

there were three ice storms in January 94...the one on 1/7-8/94 was all frozen...

On Feb 3-4th, 1970 we had rain that changed to freezing rain in the late evening and snow by 11pm...3" of powder fell on black ice...This was a very dangerous storm...temps went from 56 to 10 in 24 hours...

Was this the big one in Feb 1996? I remember there being another one that dropped close to a foot, was that around the 11-12th?

Really cool to see the back and forth with the coastal front on the ISP obs during the evening/overnight on the 6th.

Snowfall measurement in those days was depth at the end, so that 26" was massive compared to the same measurements today (sum of 6 hour snowfalls at airports).

I’m with you and posted this in NE forum - I will say I was you but family photos and memories corroborate that that beast was our best :I lived in Sound Beach on north shore of LI and I still consider this the standard. Of course, I was younger and didn’t know how to compare it to anything else. Been through so many “Blizzards” now in life it’s hard to compare all these 20” storms other than to say I know the 1/29/22 blizzard had nice drifting and cold temps with no mixing issues. PD2 similar - just brutal cold before the storm and kinda windy and lotsa blowing snow. Some had more turbulence with thunder and insane snow rates (2/8/13, Boxing Day); some were novel - 1996 was the first really 20 incher on years. Still in my heart - 1978 holds a special place and seeing analysis all these years later it was a classic cold blizzard with some of the strongest winds of them all and biggest drifts - for my area on North Shore of LI.

26"? I thought Islip measured 18" in that, like they did for the Jan 1978 surprise blizzard?

At JFK we had 12 straight hours of true blizzard conditions in Jan 2016, which is why I'll always rank that far ahead of every other snowstorm and over 30 inches of snow, more than twice what they got in February 1978.

We do best here in strong el ninos (Feb 1983, PD2, Jan 2016)....Jan 1996 being the exception of course (we also do well in la ninas that come after el ninos).
