Can someone explain to me high-level how the operational run differs from an ensemble control member? Is it just higher resolution or does it get different inputs?

I believe the control is run with the same data as the OP but at a lower resolution.  Ensembles are run at lower resolution but with slightly different data inputs.

Just a higher resolution. Control has identical initial conditions as the op. Control is good to compare to the op. When they diverge in the medium range it decreases confidence in the op.

The higher resolution of the op can magnify or compound errors in initial conditions as you go out in time.

Was there a significant snowstorm in this region sometime in January 1988? (not 1987- I know about 1987) My mom came across some pictures of us and my father and it appears to be around that time. It's a lot of snow in the pictures, looks like around 6-8" at least. NCDC site is down because of the shutdown so I can't look it up.

Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builts a bonfire, Enrico plays with it
Whistling tunes we hid in the dunes by the seaside
Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Don't know why, but I really like that song.
