The sheer quantity of foot plus reports out there is pretty amazing. In the RNK CWA, about 40 counties/independent cities had foot plus reports! This is some seriously rare air for any winter storm in this area when you think about the sheer amount of QPF and energy involved over a large area to make this sort of widespread heavy snow event happen. The heavy snow extended all the way from the northern to southern tier of the CWA with totals going over a foot going all the way to I-64. I think the NAM and SREF came closest to the extent of the heavy snow in this area. OP GFS was easily the worst of the major models.

This is an excerpt from the Blacksburg VA AFD.

As of 1030 PM EST Sunday...

Storm is winding down, however, light precipitation will
continue to generate within deformation zone which bisects our
CWA from the exiting coastal storm and the upper low to our
west. Due to lingering precip, very hesitant to nix warning and
prefer to await demise of all precipitation returns on radar.
After coordination with CRW/WBC will trim the WV counties and
possibly some of the VA highlands toward midnight, but hang onto
counties across the remainder of the CWA.

Bountiful snowfall amounts were observed across our entire CWA,
primarily south of I-64 where amounts of a foot were common.
South of 460, amounts were closer to 15 inches with pockets of
18-21 inch amounts where some of the snow bands persisted the
longest or due to orographic effects near the Blue Ridge from
the easterly upslope flow. Areas along and south of highway 58
in southern Virginia are now experiencing a mix of sleet and
freezing rain and freezing drizzle. The GSO evening sounding
validates this mixed precip type with several warm layers (above
0 deg c). Our radar Correlation Coefficient has been detecting
mixed p-types as far north as highway 40 in Pittsylvania and
Halifax Counties in addition to reflectivity bright banding.
Surface reports indicate sleet and freezing rain/drizzle.

Congratulations are in order. This is very early in the season even for Northern VA where I am originally from, but for your region this is a truly exceptional snowstorm, particularly when you consider the time of year. Enjoy the snow. Please take some jebwalks for me and dig that snow and pile it up.

This wont be the last such snow there. There will be several that impact the entire Eastern Seaboard. This is going to be an exceptional snow winter for many communities. Next winter will be even more exceptional.
