Lets call a spade a spade here:

There are certain posters who are allowed to have banter comments in non-banter threads and consequently NOT have their posts disappear. These posters include red-taggers, friends of moderators, moderators themselves, and those who have tenure on the board. There are PLENTY of banter comments during storm mode in storm mode threads I've read over the years. The decision process (if you can call it a process) behind the posts that get deleted and the ones that don't falls solely under the jurisdiction of the moderators (the few).

I, myself, enjoy the complexity and individuality of any poster's unique styles and preferences when posting in any thread. I understand the need to stay on-topic and have relevant and accurate information dissemented to the board and therefore agree with the purpose/concept of moderating. However, restricting and limiting a certain poster's "voice" while purposefully NOT restricting others  because you favor them, is in my opinion, a form of censorship. As long as the posts are not morally offensive or intended to belittle or degrade any group or individual, I say let the post stand.

Agree or disagree, thats fine. That's the point of free speech by the many, unedited by the few.

perhaps your comments in the storm thread were suppressed by the northern stream

Yay moderation policy discussion day!

I've said it before. *Most* people who get away with some banter in the threads are able to do so not because they have a special relationship with a mod, but because they've been around long enough and posted enough where people know that come game time, they will get serious and CONTRIBUTE.

Sorry, but posting

...or reminiscing about how much snow you got in Charlottesville in February 1996 from a clipper...or saying guys, guys, guys it's coming north ain't it and leaves me no confidence that a newbie is going to get serious when it's time to get serious.

I know I've been a bit of a grouch recently which is (I think) wholly uncharacteristic of me, but it's time to be real: some posters are full of ****. A lot of posters in the last two years, rookies and vets alike, have been whining and playing the victim because they can't get the attention they think they should get in the most viewed thread on the subforum.

People don't or have forgotten how to read a room, and they don't like that there has to be some level of moderation in order to keep people who actually care about legitimate discussion around.

I'd love self-policing, but in a place like this, it only takes a few bad/inexperienced posters to create chaos.

The thing is...you don't need to be a mod, met, or Bob Chill to get respect around here. You don't need to stand in line for years to get into some mythical "in" crowd.

1. Post good obs
2. Post good/interesting analysis
3. Ask interesting questions
4. Post good/funny banter
5. Make your posts relevant to people not in your backyard

Do one of those. That's the formula.

If you don't know what that is around here, that's fine, but for the love of all things cold and snowy read more and post less until you do.

It's ok to hold your tongue. It's ok to keep that joke in your head. It's ok to delete that post weenieing out about the models rather than hit submit relpy in the discussion thread.

Not every thought that wants to be said needs to be said. That's what virtually everyone here has had to do at some point and that's what every good poster does every day.

There are too many people who seem to try to make a discussion thread about them.

This is a community. It's a damn good one compared to other subforums. I am deeply concerned that we're starting a race to the bottom that will harm all of our enjoyment.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming :)

Drove from Northern Virginia down to North Carolina on 95 today. The Vdot trucks were holding up traffic, brining for several miles at a stretch with a police escort behind them to keep the travelers far back. Looked like a funeral procession. I'm not necessarily questioning the purpose of the brine,  however why do it in the middle of the day toward Rush Hour on a work day? You have three or four more days to work with. Can easily do it overnight Friday night or Saturday night, closer to the event. They must be looking at Deep Thunder

It's a backyard sport. Always has been and always will be. I actually hate it when my neighbor gets snow. I'll sneak over there in the middle of the night and shovel it all into my yard.

Omg right now I'm imagining Ji waking up the morning after a hecs to find his neighbor took a snowblower and blew all the snow from Ji's yard into his.
