Today is an example of normal is the new cool. It was one of the few days this month with near normal low temperatures for the date. So it actually felt cool compared to the recent record warm minimum pattern.

NYC.....low of 58....normal...56

ISP......low of 51....normal...52

While New York City is on the brink of having a record 4th consecutive September with a 70° or above mean temperature, Tampa is having a historic September.

The temperature reached 97° in Tampa today. That set both a daily and monthly record high temperature. The previous daily record high temperature was 93°, which was set in 1961 and tied in 1986 and 2002. The previous monthly record high temperature was 96°, which was set on September 2, 1912, and tied on September 4, 1912, September 5, 1941, September 2, 1958, September 4, 1961, September 7, 1961, September 1, 1963, September 19, 1972, September 6-7, 1991, and September 20, 2018.

With today's record warmth, September 2018 remains on track to become Tampa's warmest month on record.

If anything we're "due" for a colder winter with below normal snowfall, which was actually a common occurrence in the 80s.

I remember those well-yet we been quite cold with above average snowfall very frequently since 2000-I’m referring to one of those winters when people freak out about the lack of snow, say less than 7 inches of snow and the snow that does fall melts quickly.  Those types of winters seem to me to have occurred more frequently back before y2k

End of January through February was crazy warm and we lost all snow cover.

All the record warmth over the last 3 winters resulted in quick melt after most of our snowstorms. ISP set the record lowest number of days with 1" or more on the ground for a 60"+ season. So much snow coming later in the season enhanced this 3 year pattern for 17-18.

Snowiest seasons at ISP and the number of days with at least 1" on the ground:

Year....seasonal snowfall total.....days with 1" or more of snow cover

1996....73.5....58 days

1978....68.0....53 days

2018....65.9....30 days

2015....63.7....48 days

2014....63.7....39 days

September 2018 is concluding as a remarkable month for warmth in the eastern United States. September 2018 has become yet another case demonstrating that September has increasingly become an extension of summer rather than the first fall month in meteorological terms during the 2000s.

Select September mean temperature data from East Coast Cities:

Albany: 67.2° (8th warmest)
Asheville: 74.1° (old record: 73.6°, 1925)
Atlanta: 80.9° (2nd warmest)
Baltimore: 73.0° (11th warmest)
Boston: 69.0° (5th warmest)
Burlington: 65.7° (2nd warmest)
Charleston: 81.5° (old record: 79.8°, 1980 and 2016) -- first September with an 80° or above mean temperature
