That’s got to suck for his family.

Im not sure that would be the way I would want to leave this earth.

It's basically drowning in snow.  Has to be so scary.  When that UVM student died at Stowe in a popular area during the very deep, unconsolidated snow build-up in February 2017 (375" winter) it was eye-opening... no trauma at all, just get situated upside down in deep snow and can't get out of it.  It is some hard shit emotionally.

Brutal way to go.

Dumping at Timberline Lodge tonight. Tomorrow is a powder day then heading home. About 14” so far. Expecting at least 2ft. by morning. a5a16d266fe787e4d41fd2f5dc8f5320.jpg&key=b2aae821c2e5224f94a9979ae7a8d364ccfe931a7fc80224404d38a0792af375

.

They only reported 12” on the website. It was really windy, so hard to measure, but looks like a lot more. Powder none the less then fly back to rain in the east, yay!!!

To say Mad River Glen was a pleasant surprise yesterday would be an understatement. The hardscrabble surface conditions which I expected were well covered by the recent 2-3 inch snowfall which bonded very well with the troughs of the moguls. All on and off piste terrain was reasonably in play, with Slalom Hill, Paradise, Chute, Gazelle and Glade all skiing extremely well (as well as my favorite off piste tree shots, which will remain secret ;) ). Run of the day had to have been Lift Line; while it looked bony from the lift, the snow was relatively soft and the tower 11 ledges were in play for some aggressive charging. I couldn't help but find myself loudly announcing my approval with each drop, much to the satisfaction of two ski patrol officers on the single.

"There we go, oh yeah buddy rock it!"

Nothing gets you going like a single chair lift call-out, so of course I got too aggressive and caught an edge 10 seconds later, sending me scrambling back into Glade head down and embarrassed once I collected my strewn gear. Cat Bowl, Upper Canyon and Fall Line represented the hardpack, as they were dicey to borderline dangerous at times. The troughs on these (especially in upper canyon) were scraped out down to blue ice, enough to send someone attempting to thump a line head over heels.  In all conditions were hit or miss, but the base is very deep as even Tower 5 was opened up in the afternoon! (Backslapped the landing however, ouch). As is always the case with MRG I was worried about taking a few shots to the core, but my bases were clean outside of a few scratches, a win in my book!

Ultimately the hard pack is a tough reality that will be only made more evident with these incoming inland runners, but its incredible what high density nickle and dime events can do for conditions. I came in with lowish expectations and was just trying to sneak in a day before the rains, and left glowing ear to ear.

Place was empty as well, what a day to play hooky from class with the boys!

Timberline Lodge was a magical place for a snow lover. Watching the snow from inside while sipping cocktails by the fire. Can check it off the bucket list. The hot tub during S+ and strong winds was a bit much, frozen hair and all, but was still a blast. Timberline ski area is a little tame for my liking, but we did find fresh powder all day and found some really great tree skiing. eb77115a777b95a08ffae2ef76f6a80e.jpg0d8ea6547f0dcda31cabaf70422415e9.jpgab19630c8f7d7af06c9d76975cee4cfa.jpg36757fec1c853e2a93bde8010a1d9f98.jpgf63dbfb16af2d78e797e039ff6395111.jpg8e75a0ed13b82463d05b39ca3c8815f9.jpgbd742be05683ad7d964e08471aada015.jpg15d1ab7ac046670c0324a42debadd8f8.jpg

@snowgeek geezuz man be careful

John Burton from Timberline Lodge and Ski Area says the man was skiing with a partner in a treed area. He was found unresponsive, with no pulse by a third party in a forested area within the Timberline boundary.

Burton says there were efforts made to resuscitate him, but they were unsuccessful.

He says the man died in a tree well-related incident.

Magic survived today. Thurs-Fri were awesome. The ears had you thinking it was hard pack and crunch but it was a semi-pow day. Still some woods with 5-6" of fresh.

What a fun little mountain, their trees are great.  I really like the tight pines to skiers right of liftline.  Props to everyone that helps clear lines in the offseason.

I believe you are mentioning Voodoo which has had more work put into it in recent years than any other. Definitely some tight spaces and amazing if you are one of the first couple down it. I think in future years more will be done on the west side since the east side is almost tapped out. I think folks work just as hard to hide entrances as hard as they work to clear lines. The names are pretty fantastic as well (e.g.,Up Your Skirt, Shazam)

A guy I work with is in Tahoe for vacation this week. Multiple flight delays Saturday meant it took him 23 hours to get there and they lost all his luggage so no snowboarding gear as of this afternoon.

That happened to me prior to the 1993 Superstorm. We took 25 hours to get from BOS to Vancouver (Whistler/Blackcomb) My skis got lost.  Airline paid for rentals.

My own skis, (crappy old Kastles) once I got them, had the bindings rip out in some bumps so I had to get them fixed after hiking down 1500 vertical feet to get to a lift to return to the gondola to ride down.
