I used BWI because it had a good string of snow depth records...1960-61 had two streaks in the top ten consecutive days with 1" or more and the most days with 52...2009-10 has the most 10" days and consecutive 10" days...Also the deepest snow depth...34"...

I've decided to add RIC's information to this thread. The system only goes back to the mid 1940s, but we do have snow cover data as far back as 1921. Anyway, looks like 2009-10 had among the highest number of snow cover days within a single season since the 1940s and the most since the 1960s. There is missing data from 1995-2001 so those numbers are not correct as I know we can add a good 5-7 additional days to 1995-96.

updated as of 2/8/11...So far BWI has 11 days with an inch either falling or on the ground...Nine straight 1/26-2/3...No days with 6" or 10" so far...5" is the biggest storm...

The interesting part of the 5" storm is that it had nearly an inch of liquid. Snow has been waaay stubborn to melt off in my neighborhood. We officially got 8" and the snow turned into a glacier soon after it fell. Most nights you could walk on top of it without leaving footprints.

IMO- If the storm has normal 10-1 ratios it would have melted off days ago.

That number for BWI seems shockingly low to me. Not doubting it, I'm just wondering if there is somethign wrong with the measurement location (like it is on a slight SW facing slope or something). Without looking back at specifics, I have well over 30 days of >1" snowcover here in Clarksburg, including 3.8" on the ground now leftover from the storm 14 days ago.

It makes a big difference what side of the fall line you're on.

I don't know......if ratios were 10:1 with the same amount of precip then the storm would have been close to a HECS.

No doubt about it, Fozz...

Even up here, the sfc temps were a tad warm, then overnight, 12 inches of snow in 4 hours or so.... Plus, NYC got 19 inches of snow even with the poor ratios in the beginning.

IF it had been a 12:1 ratio, no doubt, HECS for BWI, you got 14.5" from this right? You would have been at 25 inches of snow if the sfc temps was colder. Hell, It would be like February 5-6th 2010 in terms of snowfall for you had been 12 to 1 ratio for sure.
