April 12th-15th Winter Storm

MNstorms

Recommended Posts

Had freezing rain here from about 7pm-midnight. A solid 5-7mm glaze but seems like just below the threshold for any signifanct damage.

This was a close one. Our temperature actually stalled out at +0.1C from midnight through until 7am. A couple miles north and I’m sure there’s tons more ice. Orangeville (about 30mins NE of here) still reporting below freezing temps, I’d be interested to see how much accretion ended up there.

Now for the big melt. Sleet/rain combo is basically solid. Lots of road and sidewalk flooding abound. And it’s snowing right now. Lots going on with this system!

Well..a kinda surprise snowy mess here in DVN early this morning. Probably picked up near an 1" of powdery snow overnight, which has frozen into ice, leading to numerous accidents and road closures around town. Plow crews finally called into action around 7am this morning, but obviously the morning commute damage has been done.

A really heavy band moved through between 4am-5am producing near white-out conditions and half-dollar sized flakes.

All of a sudden, Wednesday is looking mighty interesting around here. Especially on the NAM.

Spring-Who?

Yeah that was a surprise to be sure.  Picked up about a half inch from that band early this morning.  Unlike the snow last weekend this stuck to the paved areas with no problem.  Still got a nice coating out there as we approach noon.  This was enough to bump us over the 40" mark for the season. :snowing:

How much ice accumulation was there in YBY?

I estimate accretion at a quarter to a third of an inch, but I would also say that about 0.75" of freezing rain fell. Since it turned to plain rain it's hard to tell how much was freezing and how much was plain, but accretion was definitely not a 1:1 ratio. I posted pictures earlier in this thread. Picked up 0.85" rain sat morning then 1.58" of freezing rain and plain rain yesterday.

And snow cover into mid-May possibly.

Very light snow and flurries from 1 am or so on but is increasing in intensity again... 8+" by later this evening.  I haven't even started clearing any of this... 1.9" liquid, very dense!

Amazing. It's crazy when you think how long Winter lasts in the Great Lakes. I mean even down here the 1st snow was October 27th and theres still snow in the forecast as we head towards late April. The trees are not even close to blooming, but yet I look up there and I think omg. You're basically in the 6 month of Winter and your snow is now the deepest you've ever had.

IKR... in 11 days, snow will have been on the ground exactly 6 months. And not just a little bit of snow, lots. 54” on my snow stick now which is a record for me by 2”... lived here 4 years now.  Moderate snow now falling steadily.

Same here, picked up another 6-7" of lake effect last night, over 30" on the ground in my area, deepest of the this sad winter.

48 hr totals around here locally approaching 30" and a co-op obs nnw of Negaunee in excess of 30".  Including snow since midnight, MQT should be around 26-27" as well.

Nothing but flurries left.  Not sure exactly but I estimate between 28-30" fell in 53 hours... north facing ridge here cashes in every time.

If this were earlier in the season, it may rank as my all-time fav storm (especially considering snow depth in place), but that still goes to Nov 10-12 2014 when 36 inches fell.

Now can we move on with spring?!

Why do you have such a flat roof? It looks like enough snow weight that I'd be nervous, although I have no idea what tolerances they have.
