Yeah, if you've ever driven up to Montreal up 87 and into Canada you can see forever over the fields, then the city just kind of shows up in the distance.  Reminds me a bit like the approach into Dallas, Tx. (except there's no incline in dallas...just the approach from the south makes me think this )

And east of that snow hole one starts to see some elevation, plus slightly more from developing coastals.

Or Farmington's -11/-36 on 12/30/1917.  They did have a -8/-18 on 1/14/2004.  It was followed by -6/-15 on the 15th, and that 2-day average max of -7 is their coldest on record.

dam now thats a cold airmass! any speculation as to 850/925 temps with something like that? I'd guess the airmass was super cold in the lowest lvls, maybe only mixing to 950 or 925 that day? I mean if you were mixing to 850, it would have to be ~ -35 C during peak heating or something .. crazy

Does anyone the longest that snow has stayed up there into the Spring/ Summer?

I don't think they go in and out daily in winter but when they do, this is how its done.

Good question. The Feb 1943 shot that gave CON and PWM their records (-37F and -39F respectively) delivered -46F to MWN. CON pulled afternoon highs near -10F after a "cheap" early midnight high of -4F on the 15th and then finished at that -37F with light winds by the next morning. BOS had an afternoon high of -3F on the 15th after the midnight high of 6F. The 3am temp was -1F at BOS so they were literally 3 hours away from having their only below 0F max temp on record.

1933 had winds gusting over 30mph at BOS so there was some decent mixing. I don't have the 1933 MWN temps, but I'd assume they were similar to 1943. My guess is 850s were at least -35C. I mean we did -35C in Jan 2004 with -45F at MWN, but we didn't see it translate to the surface like 1933 and 1943 did.

Yeah it takes some special circumstances to get those kind of temps at the sfc...the Feb 2016 airmass sort of shows how to do it down here. We had the coldest readings since 1957 in ORH (and I think BOS too) even though the 850 temps weren't as cold as some more recent cold shots like 1981, 1994, and 2004. The cold was extremely intense around 900-925mb in the 2016 event. It was also kind of a small area too that traveled down through E NY/C and S VT and SNE...it def wasn't as widespread as an event like 1943.

It wasn't until van Dijk arrived that I even heard about the fact that Lovren had been playing on his off foot for years to accommodate other defenders in the side. And I loved watching Coutinho, but it is funny that he got bounced by Roma who now play Liverpool. Goes to show you how sometimes these players aren't advised the best by their agents.
