Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) / Subsequent -NAO / Upper Southeast Snowfalls

An official, major SSW occurred on Feb 11th.  This was the first official SSW since Jan 2013.  Zonal wind reversal from westerly (positive values) to easterly (negative values) during February here shown at 10mb, at 65 deg N.

Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) / Subsequent -NAO / Upper Southeast Snowfalls

Two weeks after the SSW, a retrograding NAO blocking episode ensued.  The NAO was negative every day from 2/25 to 3/21, or 25 straight days.

500mb pattern during the NAO blocking episode shown in the chart below.  While the Atlantic pattern was favorable for wintry precipitation in the southeast, the Pacific pattern was unfavorable. 

In spite of that, the northern sections of the southeast states have seen a few wintry events in March.
