Just one other thing I can think of and that's maximum snow cover in inches. I think both 1947-48 and 2010-11 will rank pretty high because of this. It would be interesting if you could go back to 1920 and include that one really weird storm in Feb 1920 that dumped something like 20 inches of sleet? That one had like 5" of liquid equivalent in it, I think? I dont know if these should be included in the rankings but I just thought of this- percent of winter precipitation (DJFM) that fell as snow? And also the highest LE snowfall?
Paragon
I'm grading this winter as a B+ but if we get accumulating snow in April, I'll move it to A-. A is reserved for winters in which we receive an HECS (20"+) and 50" seasonal snowfall or more. A+ for 20/
NewYorkweatherfan
Im going to change my grade to an A after 6 inches fell in my backyard on Morris Park Ave
Brasiluvsnow
Sorry guys I have to go with a B- only because the pst 3 weeks salvaged a C. Winter disappeared in February and to have snow in Spring is nice but its gone hours later and is NOT winter. Winter to me is cold weather along with snow on the ground for days or weeks I think my B - is also generous Its cool having storms to track but if they are not in the winter months or are misses Im out

We’re actually in a relatively warm spot compared to say Detroit or Chicago or even Boston. We got a lot of snow this year and historic cold I just think February was a waste but hey we even had a white Christmas most of us at least. Historic cold in January historic snow in April, historic nor’easters on March, and April isn’t done yet. And today is cold with rain the winter is still going in my opinion. North and West
All right, I was going to go with a B+ for myself right above Morristown Airport, but I’m going to an A-, with the only demerit the warmth in February. Here are my highlights and reasoning:December 9, 2017, a solid, beautiful snow that made it feel like ChristmasIt snowed Christmas EveJanuary 4, 2018It wasn’t too much out here, but it was wintry and windy as all heck. One of the few times o was truly frightened being outside in a snowstorm.Mid-JanuaryWe went to the Southern Caribbean. It was wonderful.February 7, 2018It snowed. I forgot!February 17, 2018A really beautiful storm.March 2, 2018A nasty nor’easter. No power for 2+ days.March 7, 2018Truly unbelievable here. Snow rates like I’ve never seen, and an amount of snow, about 2’ or so, that is rare. Most snow since January 2016, but far more impactful.Anyway, more snow later in March! (About 32” for the month) and another 6”+ so far in April!Amazing if I had experienced this as a kid..
cardinalland
I would give this winter an A-. I was going to say B or B+ but this April snowstorm was very nice. I liked the snowstorms, and there were some parts that really felt like deep winter. It was also great to get 40+ inches of snow. The downsides were the warmup in February (although it did feel a bit nice) and that a couple of the storms in March were disappointments for NYC. EastonSN+
A- Raised the grade from a B+ due to the "extra credit" April 6 inch storm. 28 inches from March 1st on was incredible. 55.5 on the year
gravitylover
I'm still having a hard time getting past a B. The lack of long term, midwinter, snowpack just kills it for me. A grade winters have snow on the ground from approximately the solstice through January and into February. After about mid Feb I don't expect it to last unless we put more snow on top of it. The 40" in March brought it from a B- to a B and I'm still up in the air over whether the April snow gets it to a B+. I think if it hadn't warmed up for ~6 weeks midwinter I'd feel much better about it even if there had been a short thaw in Jan and we lost the snowpack. CPcantmeasuresnow
I have very similar thoughts to gravitylover on this winter so I will reiterate a couple of his points which I also feel strongly about. First of all we lost basically six weeks of the best part of winter, mid-January through all of February. To me that means the rest of winter everything else would have to go perfectly to achieve a B because an A is impossible. At the end of February this was a D+ to C - winter. A good December, a white Christmas all positives. A good first two weeks of January with cold and snow cover all good. Followed by a record breaking 6 week mild spell, that still managed a few decent snows but they were gone within a couple of days a huge negative. Now factor in a fantastic March with 44 inches of snow, with a solid deep snow cover throughout the entire month up until the last 2 days. Throw in 5.8 inches in April now bringing the seasonal snow total to 83.1 inches and the days with snow cover to 67 and this winter does the impossible. An end of February grade of D+ to C- brings this winters final grade to a B. That's what 50 inches of snow after March 1 will do.
