NewYorkweatherfan
A- I just wish we got more snow out of the noreasters this month in nyc than I would have rated it a+ Also post your location I'm in Morris park in the Bronx, NY 42 inches
Stormlover74
38.5" Plainfield NJ. Feel like it could've been a lot more though, especially if we had this pattern a month earlier. 5" in January blizzard, and places within 5 miles did better in all 3 March noreasters mostly due to elevation and banding. Still very impressive though and didn't mind the lack of extreme cold. Final grade: B+/B
doncat
February sticks out like a sore thumb with record warmth...below normal temps for nov, dec, Jan and March...with of course record snows this month. Season snow over 50". So only Feb prevents an A, so a B grade it is. Staten Island.
hooralph
For Manhattan: Solid B +. Exciting winter. Got some nice December snows when you want it most. I have to ignore the fact I missed the January storm, but the historic cold snap was notable. The ponds in Central Park were all walkable. warm/wet February sucked, but plenty of action to finish. In the end, it was like a basketball team with some electric players and huge holes that surprised you a great season, sometimes peaking at the wrong time and ultimately going out early in the tournament. EastonSN+
In SW CT 2 of the 4 March storms failed, but the previous 2 were great and this one was good for this late in March. Dec = B+ Jan = B Feb = C+ (loved the warm spell and mid month snowstorm) March = A (may have been my snowiest March ever. Have to check the Archives). 21 inches for March alone. Winter grade B+ 49.5 total on the year. Bring on Spring.
Rjay
Everyone has a different definition of a good winter. 2 storms gave me over a foot of snow 4 nor'easter in March Arctic blast A well needed thaw Above average snow Grade: A
Zelocita Weather
C+ slighly above normal snowfall, no big storms, moderately above normal temps, but December snow was nice and March was interesting

SnoSki14
This has become a solid B- winter. It was BN for November-January (slightly) and for March. It started off really strong, cold temperatures were a big factor that culminated with the early Jan storm. However it was pretty disasterous from Jan 10 through February and the early Jan record cold really skewed the departures. March was phenomenal simply for being so stormy but storm #2 and #4 made it fantastic. For winters of the 21st century, this one ranks a bit ahead of 08/09. gravitylover
B-. Not because of low snowfall because at ~61" it was well above average, not because we didn't get a good solid cold period because -14* was pretty significant but the utter lack of a long term snowpack always disappoints me. Nibor
A- Not a typical winter but it impressed at points and deserves recognition.
Snowshack
Ill go B. Looking back, the numbers will look better than the way they came together. Dont see how you can lose February and still have an 'A' winter, although 10/11 makes a more compelling argument to me.

Juliancolton
Pros: 10 total subzero nights Coldest temp -15F 14-day stretch without breaking freezing Extensive ice on the waterways Above-average snowfall (67.7" to date) Seven significant (>4") snowfalls Long snow season, November 7 – March 22 (so far; 19 weeks) Very active March with a >1' storm; persistent late-season snowpack Approaching or hitting 80F in February was pretty neat Extremely strong storms, even those that missed, including one sub-950mb oceanic cyclone Cons 80F in February also goes here Much of the heart of winter wasted; just nuisance snows between January 17 and February 17 Multiple mild rain events Fringed bigly on Jan 4, Mar 12, and Mar 21 No super intense snowfall rates at my house like I've become accustomed to in recent years Neutral stats Average SLR of 12:1, right around climo Average snow per event 2.9", also close to normal in my records It's a B+ here. Losing the heart of the season was... disheartening, but the pros clearly outweigh the cons on the whole. The season was a jack of all trades, master of none, and that's just fine by me - I got to experience everything I love about winter, so I'm a happy camper. Cfa
Pros: WARM February Mild-ish January THUNDERSNOW Cons: Extended extreme cold period in late Dec to early Jan. Grossly excessive March snowfall, well over a year’s worth. March isn’t winter, so this is more of a spring complaint, but it fits here. I give it a C+, it was a mixed bag with something for everyone. If March wasn’t so snowy and cool/cold after an A+ February, I would’ve given this winter a B or a B+, I honestly hate a cold March more than a cold DJF. My location: SE of JFK (most of December) and W of ISP (Late December onward).

Rtd208
C+ Would like to have seen more snow earlier in the season, I am a big fan of seeing at least one significant/major snowfall in December. But we did make up for some lost time.

But we did make up for some lost time. Would go with a B-, Dec doesn't always deliver and the big storms all grazed us this year in our area, with only the last one coming close to living up to the hype. And it was gone in a flash. The warm temps in Feb were also concerning. A nice foot of snow was a good consolation prize last week, but two big storms delivering to our west and east seemed like a slap in the face. Of course, it isn't personal, but you wonder why some areas this year kept getting shafted. Hopefully not a long term trend.
LongBeachSurfFreak
B because it could have been so much more. Had the vortex split sent cold to our side of the globe we could have had a 60” March. Now that would have been beyond epic. My Vermont house had a 70” March. I’m headed up there tomorrow for 5 days of epic spring ridding!! wantagh 14” January blizzard and 13” March dump. Two 12” plus storms in one season is pretty epic. total 50”.

Paragon
Unc I'd love to see your final grade point system for all our winters, with the maximum duration snowcover and maximum total snowcover factored in. And when we can divide the numbers up into a letter grade system.
gravitylover
I was thinking that if we do get another significant snowstorm I would have to bump my grade up. My heart says 'sure lets have some more' but my head says 'NO'.

That about covers it in my book, and if you could do it, and I realize it would be a lot of work, it would be the standard by which all winters should be graded IMO. I also love the fact that you would take the average temps from December through March instead of the Met winter as many do. March in my book, especially the first two to three weeks around almost all of this forum should be included in winter stats. Three of the last 4 winters in NYC March has had the highest monthly snowfall and through the 150 year average in NYC December is 5.5 inches and March is 4.9 so how people dismiss it as spring still baffles me. Even if we take the averages since Jan 1991 which will be our next 30 year averages Dec is 5.2 and March is 4.9.
