March 20th-22nd Not So Suppressed Storm Obs

It seems that this storm performed in much of PA, under-performed for much of C and N NJ and over-performed for much of LI. Ex: I work in Summit, NJ and I don't think roads ever fully were covered. There's about 3-4 in OTG.  Locals asking...what storm?

For those in the city and on LI, was this better than January 26-27, 2015?

I really dont think anything can compare to that storm where there were widespread 2 foot totals. I am on western Long Island and liked the 2015 storm better given that the rates were insane almost all day as opposed to just a few hours at night. PLus I would'nt compare 26 inches to 13 inches. Maybe people east of me disagree.

That 4 inches in west hempstead is odd but was measured by an NWS employee.

West Hempstead         4.0   510 AM  3/22  NWS Employee

I had 4 inches at 5pm yesterday before the snow really got going. I think he meant 14 and forgot the 1.

Much of Union, up through Essex, Passaic, Bergen and Rockland got skunked. In between bands during the evening hours when our totals could've really ramped up. Oh well, it happens. Much of that area got crushed in the last storm

We've had so many big storms it's easy to confuse them.   You're thinking of Jan 2016. Jan 2015 gave us over a foot  in Nassau and crushed eastern Suffolk.

14 seems little high.  I shoveled at around 10pm and measured 7" on the grass in Garden City S.  This morning there was easily another 4"+ on my walkway.  Range for WH to GC area has to be between 11 and 13".

Numerous broken tree branches within about 1/4 mile of me here in SW Suffolk. One tree split with part falling on the back of a car. Feels like spring in the Rockies with it warm enough in the sun to want to take your coat off. Finished with 13" here.

New guidelines only allow one clearing of board in 24 hours. I cleared my board at 1:00am last night at 10.0"

Today at 7:00am, the board had .9" on it.

So my storm total is 10.9" in Whitestone, Queens.

One of the best spring storms ever for my area.

We have a fairly large pine tree next to our driveway and I always get nervous when we have heavy wet snow like this. I didn't want to move the cars out of the driveway though because the road is narrow and the plows are not.. Ended up losing a large limb out of that tree last night but thankfully missed the cars.

Be interesting to hear from posters in the zones out in Suffolk that got 20". There must be areas with quite a bit of tree damage out there.

Not as much as you would think. I got 16" up here, and no real tree damage. I drove out east today to Riverhead, through the 20" areas, and no real tree damage.

The death band was high ratio snow, very fluffy, and the winds werent terrible.

This. Ratios even in Queens were well over 10 to 1 after 6pm. During banding closer to 15 to 1.

All of the mesos yesterday hammered Long Island. Really not surprising. Unfortunately there was a wicked dry tongue which extended from SW CT down through the LHV and into parts of NE NJ.

I knew we were toast about 4pm or so.  12z Euro  yesterday showed LI getting the goodsand HRRR had a big dry tongue which verified.  We never got more than low end moderate rates which won't cut it on paved surfaces with marginal temps this time of year.  Oh well...we did well in the middle 2 storms so no complaints here.
