Seeing cars coming into town from the south with snow on them...and needless to say for here, nary a flake. Amazing. Sounds like a lake effect type cutoff. Chinook
Macomb IL has thundersnow on the airport obs, and 0.25" hail reports by spotters. Can anybody explain this?
Hoosier
Here's a shot of composite radar, so if you compare it to the base reflectivity you can get an idea of about how much of the northern area is virga

Indystorm
33/32 at Champaign IL right now with heavy rain and fog. Razor thin indeed. Whole lotta convection showing up now on radar in central IL.
Chicago Storm
Already can see some of the tight gradients showing up as LSR's come in... Looks like a 7" gradient across some counties in NE. Iowa currently.

That area of yellow on radar is moving over the QC area. I've been thinking it must be pounding under that stuff. I've been under mostly medium to occasionally bright green radar returns for the last couple hours. The snow has been light to moderate. I'd really like to get some better rates during the midday hours.

Jackstraw
Heavy returns coming into west central IN. Going to be interesting to see how that evolves as it moves into the Indy area.

Snowless in Carrollton
I think its so stupid for radar to show precip thats not reaching the ground. Why not just show precip that is reaching the ground ?

Chinook
This is a fairly normal thing to ask if you are not used to seeing virga or radar returns that look like rain/snow but then no precipitation is happening. The radar is imperfect. The 0.5 degree elevation of the radar beam (normally used to detect rain/snow) rises above the earth, mainly due to earth's curvature. As you can see on the figure, the lowest radar beam (0.5) is detecting precipitation particles at 5000 ft- 11000 ft above ground, at a range of 80 miles. That's a prime type of distance for when the radar shows rain/snow that is evaporating, and then it tricks you. It's just not a perfect system for detecting precipitation at ground level. Jackstraw
I've seen lots of virga, especially in my flying days. I've never been directly underneath it on the ground that I was aware of though. Went to the store looked up and about 2k feet above me I could see snow swirling teasing the hell out of me. Freaky stuff lol.

Chicago WX
Cyclone must be out building snowmen/women...no updates from him in awhile. And we finally broke the seal here, and are getting some flakeage...so not a total shutout, lol.

Would be a bit more annoyed by this in january, but I can deal with a miss in late march
zinski1990
Have already 6 inches here west side indy. Under heaviest snow banding ice seen in a long time with plenty of storm left to come. This is awesome
hawkeye_wx
I'm over 7 inches now and it's still ripping pretty good. The trowal is pivoting right over central to east-central Iowa. The locations to my north and east that were fortunate to get the overnight heavy snow (while I got sleet or lulls) will wind up with widespread 10-16". Chambana
What a dynamic system, a kitchen sink system here. Started off this morning with heavy snow, even thunder snow during a heavy burst, switched to rain, then sleet, and now back to pure rippage right now. Finally accumulating on roadways. Roads are a mess.
