Wanted to wait until this storm failed (maybe it doesn't but the writing is on the wall), so here goes.

Cumulative Snowfall From The 3 Airports during this 2 year span (16/17-17/18)

DCA  BWI  IAD    Total

7.1" 13.5" 13.9" | 34.5"

This is only beaten by the (even more pathetic) 11/12-12/13 streak

DCA  BWI  IAD    Total

5.1"  9.8"  16.4" | 31.3"

And the closest 2 year streak above that in the IAD era is 00/01-01/02

DCA  BWI  IAD     Total

10.6" 11.0" 15.5" | 37.1"

Now, as far as December snow goes, there is no 3 year stretch that shows has a Trace or less in December at the 3 airports, until 14/15-16/17

 DCA

14/15-16/17: T

 IAD

14/15-16/17: T

BWI

14/15-16/17: 0.2"    -BWI did actually report 0.2" in 14/15, but this is probably still the lowest 3 year stretch for December

*Will update this in the next week or so, just trying to maybe reverse jinx this next storm, and I was planning to post this for the past week or so

It's been a rough two years here also.  I have measured a total of 20.6" for the past two winters (and 8" of that was in one day last March) vs the long-term average of 26.5" a season for this area.  As for how the two-year period stacks up against previous years, using MRB:

1930-31/ 1931-32 totaled 7.1"

1931-32/ 1932-33 totaled 15.9" (a 3-year total of only 23")

1949-50/ 1950-51 totaled 18.5"

1988-89/ 1989-90 totaled 19.9"

1989-90/ 1990-91 totaled 17.9" (a 3-year total of only 27.3")

So, only 5 times in 93 years has two consecutive winters featured less snowfall than 2016-17/ 2017-18.  (There are only 6 winters in that time that had less snow than this year.)  Hopefully this current drought doesn't extend for a third year like 1930-33 and 1988-91 did.

Each of the past two winters has featured 6 days with at least 1" of snow cover, so what snow has fallen has not stuck around, making the totals seem even more bleak.

Here are snow totals for DCA and IAD covering the last eight snow seasons (including the current one) that reflect an unprecedented bust/boom/bust cycle in this region:

3 snow seasons ending Spring 2013:  DCA, 15.2 inches (lowest 3-season DC total of all-time); IAD, 29.0 inches (lowest 3-season IAD total of all-time)

3 snow seasons ending Spring 2016:  DCA, 72.5 inches (26th highest 3-season DC total of all-time); IAD, 124.0 inches (highest 3-season IAD total of all-time)

2 snow seasons through March 11, 2018:  DCA, 7.1 inches (third lowest 2-season DC total of all-time); IAD, 13.9 inches (lowest 2-season IAD total of all-time)

Thanks for contributing! Also, I'm assuming the IAD 3 year total ending Spring 2011 (being 93.9") is near the top 5 3 year stretches for IAD?

I have that as # 7.  Second all-time at IAD are the three snow seasons ending in Spring 1968, at 105.5 inches, indicating how impressive the three seasons ending in Spring 2016 were, as they broke that long-standing record by 18.5 inches.

This thread is tremendous. Well done Cobalt. For the vast majority of our forum, it has been since Jan. 16, 2016 since a warning level snow event. Snow Drought for sure.

Out here in the Central Shenandoah Valley, counting the 3.10 inches today, which is the greatest single event to date this season, I have totaled 7.85 inches. Last year I received 4.50 inches total. This compares to a normal 24.00". Other snow droughts totaled 5.75" for 07 - 08, 5.50" for 01 - 02.  The driest were 3.05" for 91/92 and 3.25" for 80/81.

The two most generous seasons were 65.80" during 95/96 and 62.85" for 09/10.  This references all years since 1979.

It appears as if the reverse jinx worked! Same as the drought thread. This single storm puts the airports out of many futile standings.

The 7.8" at DCA, 15.2" at BWI, and 11.9" at IAD puts this year's cumulative snowfall at the 3 airports pretty decently out of the top 10 worst, with 12/13 being #10 with 23.8", and this year being 34.9"

The 48.6" of cumulative snow at the past 3 airports for the past 2 years puts the 3 airports out of the top 2 worst 2 year stretches in the IAD era, with 11/12-12/13 (31.3"), and 00/01-01/02 (37.1") being ahead of it

I'm not fully sure what it's ranking is in total, since I only had done the bottom 3 worst (which was counting this year at the time), but my assumption is it's maybe bottom 5 or just above 5th.

The 7.8" for the season at DCA puts DCA way out of the top 10 worst seasons on record, with the 15th worst having a total of 5"

I'll add a bit more data to the mix when I can. Plenty I can add, especially to IAD & BWI alone.
