The 500mb cutting off means now the storm is cut off from the jet stream essentially slowing it down to a crawl
The first photo is H5 (500mb level) and the second is H7 (700 mb level). To the poster who asked for the explanation, this is the visual way of presenting the info dmillz just described. The H7 has a closed contour (closed circle) and the h5 is close to closing. North and West of H7 is where the heaviest precip will be. Furthmore as the LP closes off, this will create the strongest intensity for a time before it begins to move east once more (it will crawl for a time). b0db37f61288c39b29c24c2673d998b5.jpgb509e93332076d81a0a96f0ebd66c4bf.jpg

Same here in Queens. Light to moderate, run of the mill. Not even an inch on the ground, seems like west, east, north and south of my area are doing better lol.

I don't understand why NWS ups the totals so much as the storm starts. They've done this several times the past few years and ended up busting WAY high. Their original call of around 6"-8" was fine for NYC. There are less than 3 hours left. Right now I have 2" of slush.

Close low not Cut off.  Cut off are seperated from the main jet,  You normally see then over the southwest.

Yeah I was wondering what they were talking about. Usually cut off lows are multi-contoured and they're not apart of any trough in the jet stream. This is simply just a low closing and allowing the winds to circulate completely around the area of lowest pressure at the 500mb height.

This is what a cutoff low looks like:

Yes I apologize I meant closed low.

Those of us closest to the city are not getting a big amount. Way it is. If i were a few miles west I'd be in a better storm. But we are approaching 4 inches now. Nice, but a far cry from a foot.

Funny enough, I read his explanation and didn't even realize he said cut off.

You have 2" of slush?  I'm jealous.

Barely snowing at all now.

It could be. Areas just miles from me have significantly more snow. I mean like a ten minute drive.

Just wait and see what happens.  Maybe the last few hours deliver.  Even if they don't, is it worth spending the rest of the storm - and possibly the last storm of winter - complaining?
