Winter of 2017-18 Records set at Detroit, MI *records go to 1880 for snow, 1872 for temps/precip) Daily Records: Nov 1: Record snow Trace Nov 10: Record low 19F Dec 13: Record snow 6.3” Dec 27: Record low -4F Jan 11: Record high min 43F Feb 9: Record snow 9.2” Feb 20: Record high 65F Feb 20: Record high min 49F Feb 20: Record precip 1.10” Mar 1: Record precip: 1.42” Monthly Records: December: 5th snowiest December on record 22.5” February: 11th snowiest February on record 21.0” February: 9th wettest February on record 4.27” Record Cold Snap: 12 consecutive days (December 26 - January 6) failed to reach 20F in Detroit. The old record was 11 (1936 & 1979) Extreme calendar week temperatures -2nd coldest last week of December on record (Dec 26-31) with temp 8.8F -Coldest first week of January on record (Jan 1-7) with avg temp 6.4F ***beat previous record by 3F!*** -4th warmest last week of February on record (Feb 22-28) with temp 42.6F -13th coldest first week of April on record (Apr 1-7) with temp 34.9F Oddity: Heavy Snowfall in February the last decade: 7 of the top 11 snowiest February’s have occurred since 2008 Record start to the snow season:Through February 11th, 52.5” had already fallen on the season. This is the 3rd snowiest on record through Feb 11th. Only 2013-14 (70.8”) and 1977-78 (56.9”) wee snowier. MET winter: 6th snowiest Met Winter on record with 52.7” (only 1907-08, 1925-26, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2013-14 snowier). Side note, had the March 1st snowstorm occurred one day sooner, it would be 4th snowiest. But cant say “what if” in weather. The simple law of averages would imply that it's a good chance we will crack into the top 20, regardless of what the current 7 day forecast is. Might we not make it? Absolutely. But at this point you have to remember what time of year it is and how late it can snow here. Some people get tired of what they call stale snowcover that sits there day after day midwinter, this is kind of the opositte. Early and especially late season snow can melt fast, but it still counts towards the season total lol. Measurable snow is fairly common into mid and even late April.
