Bo due to the spring that wont come...am I right in thinking that you are technically below avg on the season but this is the greatest depth you've ever seen?

You’re exactly right. This area is probably 40-50” below still. And yeah, as I posted a min ago, this is my best depth by 2”, although out-and-about sledding I’ve seen deeper.

For those maybe curious how the snowpack is faring to the warm up. After 48 Thursday and 55 Friday, a considerable amount of snow has melted.  My road is almost impassable in spots because of slushy, muddy standing water.  I'm thinking around the 10th of May snow cover will be gone and nook-and-cranny/remnant piles late May perhaps.  Even tho I had heard Robins were back in parts of the UP, I saw my first one this morning.  I have different things out that I read they may eat, so hopefully they can hang on a bit longer until some ground starts showing up.

Out this morning measured depths anywhere from 38-45"

Appreciate the photos, Im interested to see when the snow finally melts up there. Algonquin park posted a few days ago that certain portions of the park will remain closed into may this year because of ice. The park rangers measured 24" ice on the lakes still.

After today I'm thinking snow will be gone much sooner than I previously guessed.  The snowpack is just no match for warm sunshine and 55. Lot's of water.

Interesting tidbit from MQT:

We took advantage of the calm, quiet weather to go out this afternoon and take a few measurements of the snowpack this afternoon! To do so we take a snow depth measurement and a snow core, which determines how much liquid water remains in the snowpack. We're still holding onto 24'' of snow and just under 8'' of liquid water in the snowpack here at the NWS in the Negaunee Township

Yeah after seeing several examples of extremely rapid melt-off in the past few weeks I agree.  The strength of the sun is now as strong as it is around August 20th.

A seasonal snowpack with 8-9" water content has a little more staying power than fresh April snow, but not much.

Froze up hard last night with a temp of 21... can walk atop the snow again.

So much snow in the UP that never really gets measured in the deeper belts.

Muskallonge Lake, eastern UP

Ok, we are thinking the weather is turning and the tables will bloom!

People, Deer Park Area still has LOTS of snow, seasonal and back roads ARE NOT OPEN! Use caution and call ahead for updates 906-658-3338.

Campground is scheduled for a May 4th opening (semi-modern) and even that will be monitored, stay tuned....

Its crazy. The UP is so rural as it is, add in all the microclimates, who knows how deep it gets in places.

The deepest snow is see annually is just west of here, north of the Silver Lake Basin.  I didn't make it over there much this season but I'm sure it was deeper than at my house. Another spot with deeper snow is just north of here, a bit sw of the the 510/ triple AAA road intersection... and of course my location facing north on a 1600' hill is a nice micro climate as well for n, nnw, ne lake effect snows, as well as ideal for upslope and lake enhancement with systems.

64 was the high here yesterday with very little wind... nice melt day, felt amazing!  Today should be a couple degrees warmer before a slight cool down to more  normal temps.

Average depth in my yard is 28".  Snow stick reading a few inches more at 32, but it does get a bit more afternoon shade than open areas.  The daily thaw and nightly refreeze of the snowpack has really toughened up what's left... def a glacier pack.

Still dealing with snow on the ground, but you don't have to go very far south to find little to no snow. Marquette is mostly bare except for shaded areas, north facing hills, and remnant snirt piles everywhere. A bit more snow up here with 15-20" otg, but did notice areas like the bases of trees as well as south facing hills opening up here and there.  The snow leaving feels like an event, even a tinge sad about it for whatever reason, idk. Tomorrow marks six months straight with solid snow cover.  Maybe a week more left... not sure.  The first part of the weeks looks nice.

this afternoon

About 25ish inches on the ground here. Very quickly melting.

Per usual, our backyards are one of the very last areas in the U.S. east of the Rockies to have any seasonal snow left on the ground, but even with temps staying in the 30's today there was still significant melting. Down to 33 now with a north wind and scattered low lake clouds racing by.  One more cool day tomorrow in the 30's then a nice warming trend to the upper 60's- near 70.  Snow cover should be gone by Wednesday (if not Tuesday) with only piles remaining.

Robins are back, I'm seeing more coyote tracks, haven't seen any bear tracks yet, but I'm bringing in the suet and sunflower feeders at night anyway, as it's just a matter of time before they're stirring.  The woods are waking up... waiting on the peepers... no deer since sometime in January tho.

Time to get started on spring projects I've been fantasizing about all winter!:frostymelt:
