I figured it would be a powdery snow as the temp has dropped to 24 but it sounds like sleet outside. The flakes on the ground feel and look like sleet as well. Any explanation y’all? That looks too dense to just be snow Pixie dust is usually very light and fluffy. I don't know what you would call that or what would cause it, especially at these temps. 1234snow
As Jeff would say that’s “pixie dust” very fine powder probably 20:1 ratio stuff, the kind the slopes love! Yeah but it’s not fine or powdery and that’s what is confusing. It is more like grainy pellets but not sleet! Man you never disappoint in the meme department. TellicoWx
Learned something new...always assumed graupel and sleet were the same when actually they are not. The pic appears to be graupel, when supercooled water condenses on a snowflake.

Chattownsnow
Radar really looks to be lighting up downstream for the great valley. Still not seeing any snow from that band however. Any chance this holds together and gives this event a second wind?
bearman
I am surprised you are seeing nothing it looks like the band has slowed way down or is even stoped its eastward progression. I am sure it is very temporary.
bearman
It is building southwest of Hytop I did not think that was expected. looks like Chatt. should benefit from it.

Stovepipe
Based on radar, it looks like driving along I-75 right now between Sweetwater and Cleveland would be interesting.

That narrow band is pointed right at you is it not? it will most likely get blunted before it gets there.

Just bone chillling cold. All of the snow that was on the roads has turned to black ice. It’s very slippery right now. I think that band must be virga. I’m right under it and there is no ground truth.
RawCrabMeat
Solid returns showing up in SE Knox. Sky looks ominous from Maryville, but dry here. What's it looking like in Knox?

Bango
After giving up, returns picked up in Kingsport and starting laying down snow rather than grapple. I might make 1 after all
1234snow
Okay took a little cat nap and woke up and it’s ripping little tiny flakes now. These are the normal high ratio powdery flakes unlike earlier. 19 degrees and the best rates of the event so far. There is a strip of snow that is connected all the way to the Gulf. Haven’t seen that in a long time.

With a high of 23 here tomorrow I'm wondering how the morning commute will be like. Bet UT at least goes with a 10am opening. It was funny, they sent out a big message saying "UT IS OFFICIALLY CLOSING AT 5PM" today. I was like, well thanks for closing right at quitting time!
