A friend of mine who lives in the Rockaways said she only had about six inches, I thought that area had a lot more??

It was probably much more than that. I live 30 minutes east of there and had over a foot I'm pretty sure. I posted some pics a few pages back of my house and street as it was wrapping up. Obviously much more than 6".

As Deep Winter comes to a temporary end and we mild up, here are some pics from the Long Beach boardwalk late this afternoon. Wish I could've made it there in the heart of the storm but conditions were too ridiculous. This storm'll be in my top five.

Didn't notice any ice in the water but there was definitely ice building up on jetties. Shockingly Reynolds Channel doesn't have much ice on it, but the smaller inlets are all iced up now. Ponds are completely frozen over and many have lots of snow on them.

JFK undermeasured again didnt they- just like Feb 1978.  We had 15" here and an all day white out and I was snowed in and had to climb out a window to get outside.  From Sheepshead Bay east it was 12+

Oceanside came in with 16” and Rockville Centre had 14”, so it gives me more confidence I had at least a foot. Roads around town are still awful.

15" the JFK total needs to be discarded as the garbage report that it is.  I couldnt take any pics until the next day because there was nothing to take pics of except a white out that lasted all day.

I just can’t believe that my area actually did as well or better than most. I was up all night slapping myself to wake up.

LOL I would have paid to see that.  But night wasn't the time to be up, it was most of the day that we had white out conditions that made it so awesome :)

could be inadequate measuring in this case, but it absolutely occurs in arctic air. the upper midwest and lakes regularly see clippers and lake effect events that produce 30:1+ ratios.

I thought southern new england was in the low 30s and horrible ratios and the snow was much wetter there?

I believe this was the heaviest snowstorm for portions of the Jersey Shore since Boxing Day.

ACY....14.2 vs 18.5 on Boxing Day.

17" at Cape May and 20" at Point Pleasant Beach in NJ was the highest amount I heard about for this storm.

...Summary of Blizzard Conditions for the January 4, 2018 Winter
Storm...

The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to
further review by the National Weather Service.

A blizzard occurred on Thursday, January 4, 2018 over Long Island as
well as portions of New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley and
southern Connecticut.

The official definition of a blizzard is:
-Sustained winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph
-Considerable falling and/or blowing snow
-Visibility frequently reduced to less than 1/4 mile (see note below)
-Occurs for three hours or more

Note - for this analysis, automated surface observing system
visibility reports equal to 1/4 mile were included due to the nature
of the sensor.

At Kennedy International Airport, Blizzard criteria were reported
from 810 AM to 143 PM EST.

At La Guardia Airport, Blizzard criteria were reported from 751 AM
to 151 PM EST.

At Long Island MacArthur Airport (Islip, NY), blizzard criteria
were reported from 756 AM to 140 PM and 326 PM to 456 PM EST.

At Republic Airport (Farmingdale, NY), blizzard criteria were
reported from 806 AM to 331 PM EST. The present weather sensor

weather sensor failed, but snow was verified by radar.

At Westchester County Airport (White Plains, NY), blizzard criteria
were reported from 856 AM to 256 PM EST.

At Igor I Sikorsky Memorial Airport (Bridgeport, CT), blizzard
criteria were reported from 852 AM to 1232 PM EST. The present
weather sensor failed, but snow was verified by radar.

At Danbury Municipal Airport (Danbury, CT), blizzard criteria were
reported from 1053 AM to 353 PM EST. The present weather sensor
failed, but snow was verified by radar.

At Groton-New London Airport (Groton, CT), blizzard criteria were
reported from 826 AM to 256 PM EST. The present weather sensor
failed, but snow was verified by radar.

Elsewhere across the Tri-State, near-blizzard conditions occurred at
Central Park, NY, Newark Liberty International Airport (Newark, NJ),
Teterboro Airport (Teterboro, NJ), Tweed New Haven Airport (New
Haven, CT), and Meriden Markham Municipal Airport (Meriden, CT).
These locations failed to meet the length of time criteria for winds
and/or visibilities.

Wow, no wonder we had a day long white out.  Did this storm set the record for the longest period of blizzard conditions at JFK and LGA?

It is clear to me that the turning point for this storm was when Rjay changed the title on the thread to Fish bomb or something similar I don't even remember the exact title now. Forget Grayson the idiotic name TWC gave this storm. If they are going to insist on the moronic practice of naming winter storms this one should be renamed Rjay.

Winter storms should definitely be named but not names like that.  Use the Greek alphabet and just append it with the year so you can reuse the name.

The reason they should be named is you have something like Feb 2010 when you have 3 major storms in a month and get confused which storm is being talked about.

Winter storms get named in Europe too- heck we even name fires LOL.  So I see no reason why winter storms shouldn't be named here.  You can use an impact scale like TWC uses and base naming off of how many people are covered under winter storm warnings or balance area vs population.

Just went past JFK on the LIRR. No way they had less then 10”.

I know a spot with the absolutely most insane drifting. On jones island. It’s a combo of a huge open expanse and being on a barrier island. Easily 10’ drifts there after Boxing Day. I’ll grab and post pics tomorrow

This is just like when Feb 1978 was undermeasured there at 14" LOL

More like 22"

and this one was around 15" all the reliable reports from our area cluster around that number.

The JFK number should be thrown out, I would accept an incomplete over the bogus number they posted.

Wow that's a lot of blizzard and near-blizzard conditions, Ed! In 2/78 they undermeasured to 14 when in fact we have reliable observers nearby who reported around 22; in this case they undermeasured to 8 when it was closer to 15.

With regards to storm surge, (which this storm also had), I remember reading that 2/78 had a significant storm surge in our area (the Rockaways, for example.)  Were the wind gusts around back then similar to this storm, Ed?

It’s possible that a lot of other totals were inflated due to snow blowing off roofs. That’s why I was hesitant to say I had more than a foot. It was really impossible to say because of all the drifts. But if you look back to some photos I took, one was a good 4-5 ft high on the side of my house, and driving around over the next few days, it doesn’t look like we had less than places like RVC or Oceanside. This was absolutely one of the most impressive storms I’ve been in. Walking north was almost impossible here at the worst of it.

How do you compare this to Boxing Day/Night, JM?  Similar totals?  It's just that was longer lasting- maybe just a few more inches?

Boxing Day was definitely a few more inches plus where I am. I think we had close to 20” then, we were ripping like crazy early that night and then the snow band pushed west into N.J. Luckily this time the subsidence wasn’t as bad east of the band but that was a longer lasting storm for sure.

I’d still rate Boxing Day better than this one, the winds were just as insane if not more then, and the higher amounts.

Yeah and I remember we had thundersnow with that one.

One thing I can't figure out is this one was like 951 mb why weren't the winds stronger?  Was the track too far to the east? But if it tracked closer wouldn't we have risked mixing with sleet?  I guess we had a little wiggle room but no place on long island saw higher than 70 mph gusts, maybe even not that high- more like 66.

It’s times like these that I get peeved I missed the Jan 2016 monster. :(

It was better measured because the winds were less but that was definitely king around our area.

One of these days I'll post comparison pics of PD2 vs 1/2016 and you'll see how much more snow was there, I literally felt like I was in the Alps lol.
