mattie g
The Potomac was foggy as we crossed earlier. Pretty thick in the middle. What’s impressive is that tilts still mostly iced all the way across.

CAPE
Rained its azz off here today. 1.15" Temps in the 60s and heavy rain does a number on snow and ice. Just a few drifts and piles of snow left. Ice gone off the inland rivers.. Some neat looking advection fog with the warm air over the cold water. I would say the vast majority of posters forget that we live in the sub-tropics and that snowfall is common in the sub-tropics especially high terrain. nw baltimore wx
We need a report from jonjon. It looks like the transition is happening out there. Also, special weather statement for western and northern areas. 944 PM EST Fri Jan 12 2018 ...RAIN CHANGING TO SLEET AND SNOW OVERNIGHT... A strong cold front will usher in much colder air across the region later tonight. Before precipitation ends, rain is expected to change to sleet and snow northwest of the Interstate 81 corridor, and may do so as far southeast as the northern and western suburbs of Baltimore and Washington. While road temperatures are currently warm, gusty winds and rapidly falling temperatures could cause a flash freeze on untreated surfaces, especially in locations where precipitation lingers after the temperatures have fallen below freezing. Accumulations on non- paved surfaces will be light, ranging from an inch or two across eastern Allegany, eastern Grant and eastern Mineral counties down to just a light coating along the I-81 corridor. Little or no accumulation is expected close to Baltimore and Washington. Overnight and early Saturday morning motorists should monitor road conditions closely and exercise caution if sleet and snow begin falling. csnavywx
Couple of TOR warned cells out west of Richmond now. Beautiful pre-frontal trough setup with strong southeasterlies out ahead and plenty of shear. Instability is very weak, though. Another 500-1000 joules of CAPE and this would've been a significant cold-season severe outbreak.
