I would think the longest stretch below 20 for International Falls would have to be longer than 42 days?  The Grand Forks NWS office has a video up right now stating that Fargo was below 0 from Jan 15-Feb 20 1936.

I dunno. I get my info from this site: http://xmacis.rcc-acis.org/#

The Fargo thing is super impressive. As you stated, their record for consecutive days of staying 0˚ or below is 37 days. 2nd place for them is 11 days (Feb 1-11, 1899 and Jan 24-Feb 3, 1996), so that's putting a record way out there to probably never being broken. And interestingly enough, Fargo's record for consecutive days with a temp sub 20˚ is 42 days (Jan 11-Feb 21, 1936).

INL's record for consecutive days at or below zero is 14 days (Jan 2-15, 1912).

As for the closing 7 days of December (the 25th thru the 31st), assuming ORD adds 12 degrees today, 2017 will be the 2nd coldest mean average temp in Chicago's recorded history for those 7 days.

1) 3.4˚ in 1983

2) 6.6˚ in 2017

3) 9.4˚ in 1899

4) 9.9˚ in 1925

5) 10.9˚ in 1924

For Fort Wayne and Moline, 2017 will be the coldest Dec 25-31 on record.

Fort Wayne

1) 7.4˚ in 2017 (thru 12/30)

2) 7.9˚ in 1983

3) 9.6˚ in 1924

4) 11.2˚ in 1961

5) 11.5˚ in 2000

Moline

1) 6.5˚ in 2017 (thru 12/30)

2) 6.9˚ in 1924

2) 6.9˚ in 1983

4) 7.9˚ in 1886

5) 8.0˚ in 1925

Thanks Tim! I was going to look some of those up this weekend and you saved me the trouble. I'm not sure that I could handle those MN streaks.

I endured that '94 tundra stretch in NMI. Brutal, brutal, brutal stuff I hope never to see again! It didn't help that my car had a heater issue. Some mornings at -35F I couldn't even defrost the windshield, had to scrape frost off the inside to see my way to work.

Ski’d all day yesterday and today at chestnut mountain in northwest IL/Iowa border. Finally headed in around 8 tonight with a reading of -6. As long as I kept moving it wasn’t too bad. No exposed skin and 3-4 layers. Riding back up the lifts was when it started getting unbearable. Not much wind, but what little there was instant bone chill, by the top of the lift the cold would make its way into my layers and start freezing my sweat.

Got down to -15F here for the low this morning. Looks like Ely made it down to -35F, and that is the coldest spot I can find in Minnesota on the NWS page, although I wouldn't be surprised if some PWS or COOP sites went lower.

Crane lake got to -36 is the lowest I could find.

For the NE quarter of Minnesota I'd say you would almost expect at least one -30 or below low temp per winter. It doesn't always happen but you'd be a fool to bet against it on December 1 of any year.

Just hit -13 here.  Still 7-8hrs to go so it looks like we may give -20 a run.  Pretty impressive considering winds aren't even close to calm.  The water coming out of the taps is very cold, so a bit concerned about pipes freezing.

Cedar Rapids already down to -22.  This high pressure is no joke.

Cloud cover saved us from having the bottom fall out....a toasty 2 degrees.  Zanesville and other places in eastern OH are -7,  I'm assuming they had clear skies.

If we clear clear tonight, I bet we go lower than the -5 guidance.

The last I checked Newark/Heath had -9 before the cloud cover rolled in.

Wow thanks Tim for doing my research for me! The forecast thru Saturday is no highs of 20°. If that happens it would be a new record at 12 days for Detroit. NAM MOS has us touching 20 tomorrow bit nothing else points to it. Sometimes DTW seems to get an afternoon boost in temps on sunny days too. But regardless a real legit shot here.

Looks like Chicago (KORD) has a chance of tying the record. If it weren't for an early midnight high of 21 on Christmas day, it might be a record.

The Cedar Rapids airport hit -24 this morning, which I think is the coldest temp since the all-time record was set in Jan 2009 (-29).  The school/personal stations here in the city hit the -17 to -21 range.

My plants should be in good shape.  A foot of densely-packed(but airy) oak leaves, plus several inches of fluffy snow, makes a great insulator.  The plant crowns are probably no worse than 30 degrees.
