Incredible weather extremes right now, I'm at 64 under cloudy skies and showers with dews 60+ in mid January after no 32+ readings for 13+ days.

95-96 ish.   I remember a few cutters after the big snows and cold of late Dec/early Jan that year...same type of weather as today-warm rains, rapidly melting snow.

I was wondering about that but haven't had time to look into it with this system.  I know ice jams have done some serious damage in the Port Jervis area in the past.

Yup, Port Jervis and further down near Bushkill, Pa are bad areas for ice jams. With this rapid snowmelt, it definitely raises an eyebrow.

The temperature swing this week is more extreme than what happened in Jan 96.

This extreme to record warmth around the 2nd week of January has become a thing here since 2012. Pretty impressive continuation of the pattern this year considering the 2nd coldest first week of January on record.

Newark high temperatures:

1-12-18....62 so far

1-12-17....67R

1-13-17....61

1-10-16....65R

1-11-14...61

1-14-13..58

1-7-12...64R

Kind of like the week before xmas is now regularly 50+ degrees

this air mass streaming over all the cold/frozen near shore water is making for an ugly day at the airports. jfk has had vis as low as 200' right by the icy jamaica bay. 48 there now (high of 54 so far during period of gustier winds) vs 63 at ewr. the same thing has been happening at dca with dense fog right on the runways next to the potomac.

I’m surprised how much above guidance temps are going with no sun.  I don’t think nyc will do it though because that S wind has a slight ocean component there

Record warmth making it well to the north today. Pretty extreme so soon after a record low of -20 a few days ago at BTV.

...NEW RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE SET AT BURLINGTON VT...

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 57 DEGREES HAS BEEN SET AT
BURLINGTON, VT FOR TODAY. THE TEMPERATURE MAY RISE FURTHER THIS
AFTERNOON. THE BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 55 DEGREES SET IN 1980.

JFK stopped all deps and arrivals between 12 and 1225 due to windshear. Rough weather just aloft. Airplanes were reporting +30 knots on takeoff, which is simply astounding and unusual.

it's likely a combo of the convective showers rolling through and the extremely shallow inversion, which is only a couple hundred feet thick. 50KT+ showing up on the jfk terminal doppler at 800-1000'.

JFK has become a punching bag of the weather lately lol.

Just had a water rescue up here in Orange County along NYS 209 in Deerpark, residence was surrounded by water, not sure if it was an ice jam though or "just regular" flooding

EDIT:  Confirmed ice jam.

Probably one of the fastest snowpack melts here from the fog and mild temps without any rain yet.

Not good. More rain on the way.  Hope nobody was hurt.

12z euro is a decent hit for next week. Around a foot for Orange County. As per maps in the New England forum.
