I think for the boiling water trick, it has to be at least -30c (-22f) to have a shot. It will never happen in my hood. It worked at -20F in the northern Poconos in the Jan 2009 outbreak. DavisStraight
I think it was back in 2005, I had some work on the cape and the bay was frozen as far as I could see. I'd be leery of walking on frozen salt water with underneath wave action.

dendrite
It feels weird outside right now. I can't recall the last time it felt this raw with a temp below 0F. It was spitting clear sky flurries most of the evening with relative humidities much higher than you typically see around here with these temps. If we could get another 15F colder I think we'd be primed for some IC in the valleys.

ice1972
Was reading how Hartford’s record low is -26 in January 1961.....I mean how would this ever be broken? Seems more likely that the record high would be broken before that record low.....103 July 2011.....when were we ever even within 20 degrees of that low? Man.... adk
We use gas to heat the house in BTV. Every year in june we agree on a set per month charge for the next year. We won the bet this year. Using gas like it's water! The lake still has a lot of warmth in it so it will be interesting to see how it holds up over the next week. The last time the lake froze over was in 2015 but that took till early february to freeze and it stayed that way till April 15.
