Wind.  When I got in last night a combination of a temp spike to 36* and gusty winds had the sound of breaking glass all around is it broke from the branches and was shattering on the ground.

Heat loss from the sfc once it cleared out may have helped too...especially when barely above freezing.

very impressed with how the low lvl cold air held on to the end, temp ended up rising to 33.5 briefly at 12:30 last night. Pretty cool to see how most of the ice remains on trees / surfaces within about 10 feet of the ground and everything above has melted off. Also my driveway is going to be a disaster for awhile it seems .. theres legit 1/2" of bulletproof ice over it .. ugh
