jbenedet
12Z GEFS still really wintry for many...Shortwave stronger, but so was our Northern Stream UL trough, resulting in nice trend on that Canadian surface hp with many members showing 1040-1050 mb HP positioned near southern quebec by 12z Saturday. Lets mild it up and wash some of this away, and then start new. January Thaws are part of every winter...or at least the good winters anyway, bring it. Royalton Vt in short order. Only downside was that my keys fell out of a hole in my jacket pocket while I was crossing the village green. They were not seen again until early May when the last of the snow melted and a housemate spotted them. How about a metal detector? I had to do that one year when my son left something out. I borrowed a metal detector and viola!

dryslot
Siggy ice, As much as i don't like ice, I really don't like flooding rains in Jan either, This run looks to head that off beforehand as well.

ORH_wxman
I'd prefer to see the airmass already established when the event begins over trying to advect it in during the early stages....but December 2008 did the latter and obviously it was still a huge event for some. weathafella
Our only hope to avoid sitting in the dark is this trends so strong we sleet or snow vs ice. Hope 2 is it trends less (unlikely imho).
ma blizzard
what do we want to look for in order to have a colder look? From what I can gather it seems like this run had the vortex north of Hudson bay displaced south a little which acted to compress the flow more than the 0z run. Added confluence seemed to result in strong surface high / push of low lvl cold air.

A slower southern stream will also help I think...it allows the cold to just keep filtering down before we see an attempt at warm air advection aloft (eventually coming closer tot he surface)
