Lookout
I took a drive this afternoon and was blown away by how much impact lake Lanier has on totals near by. In the course of a mile, I saw it go from 4 to 6 inches still on the ground to ZERO at the lake. Where I stayed at is between the chestatee river and little river...at almost the high point...so im lucky shes at where she is because in both directions there was way less. The max here was 5 inches on the ground before melting started But in less than a 5 minute drive to the west that much was still on the ground at 3pm this afternoon...so I'm guessing there was 7 to 9 at least....just an amazing difference over such a short distance. I knew it had some influence here in marginal situations but this was a bit surprising. Of course the weenie in me makes me feel like I got screwed lol..even though I'm more than happy with seeing what I got and the scenery today was gorgeous . We're due for a strong CAD event. This storm may have set us up for something in the future. It made some solid early season snowpack as it headed north Way behind where I am. Got a couple of flakes and that is it. Hopefully the next storm takes the Jan 2000 track even though that leaves most of this board out. The Raleigh area folks on the board would love it though. We need another one to take that exact track. We have not had a major snowstorm that hit the Carolinas from the mountains to the eastern piedmont since 1988. It has been either the mountains or the peidmonts of both states since then, but not both from the same system. Not even the superstorm did it. CummingGaSnow
So, this was the biggest snowstorm I've ever witnessed in my life, and the majority of the heaviest snow; where an intense convective snow band setup over my area, occured right around sunset giving me what seemed like hours to view the longest duration heavy huge fat wet flakes that I've ever seen and could have ever imagined would fall. I was standing at my window in absolute AWE of the duration and intensity of it. Literally there were flakes the size of seemingly quarters falling for it seemed like forever. My neighbors were outside looking just about in awe as I was, it was something I will very likely never see again in my life, nor will they. December 8-9,2017 will be a day me as a hardcore weather enthusiast/snow buff will never forget. I could write more about it, but I'm probably boring you. Also, finally those areas in the W/NW Metro like Cobb/Douglas/Carroll, etc got clobbered as well; we have been overdue for all the systems lately that seem to always put us on the wrong side of the rain/snow line. This was OUR storm my north metro neighbors! Also with the deep snowpack it will only managed to hit 35.1 at my house. I'm very excited to see how the snowpack will affect temps over the coming days. Ok, I could probably write more but that's all. WHAT A HISTORIC STORM!! Oh I forgot to add my total was about 8" or so, but my highest measurement was just under 10"!!! atomic_rooster
Yeah, your right about the early jan. 1988 event ...snow stayed on the ground for days...the 2000 event was Great ! My family lives in Rockingham...they got 21 inches...power was knocked out...the low pressure moved from upper S.C. thru too n.c over Richmond county north to Southern Pines ... then north... now that's what we need this winter for the Sandhills...too Rise again..Or just Cold rain
wx n of atl
Received 6-7 inches of snow! I was expecting 3 inches. This storm totally over did it. Someone needs to do a summary on the storm and what actually did happen. was the low that powerful? Was the dry air (or cold air) closer than we expected? I have not read what everyone is saying about this storm yet, but watching you guys try to figure it out, proves to me it wasn't an easy thing to figure out. I would love to watch a replay of radar from start to finish. I want to see where the rain/snow line setup from TX, MS, AL, to the carolina. You know I'd never thought about how the lake could influence local temps in these situations but I suppose it definitely could. Very interesting. After that read I'm glad I live somewhat far to the west of it lol. BTW, Forsyth had a big gradient. I work in East Forsyth and there was certainly a pronounced decrease in accumulations. It's funny, even a couple miles to my south there was a good bit less, but then as I traveled that extra mile or so closer to home is when the totals really racked up. I suppose I'm very lucky to live just as far north as I do. I'm pretty sure I was very near the bullseye in my county! I'm 5 miles NW of Cumming and about 5 mile south of Dawson, btw. Glad it worked out for you all No thunder or lightning here. This storm had literal tree crushing snow for GA. The sounds last night were terrifying yet somehow beautiful. At first I thought some neighbors were setting off fireworks until I watched a huge branch fall in my yard and I finally matched up the sound to what was happening. Crack, crack, crack, boom. Simply amazing for so early and so far south. The tree damage around W and NW Atlanta is probably needless to say, extensive. NWS confirmed my 9” total. I estimated 10” so not too far off from official. It was a true paste job like concrete snow.

I would guesstimate Buford only got about 4" of snow, most of it coming Friday evening around 6:30 PM. Being right under that rain/snow line, our temps stayed above freezing during most of the event. It was interesting to note that various Wunderground weather stations were showing 29-30 degrees in the Alpharetta area, while Buford had 34 degrees...only about 5-6 miles, as the crow flies. burrel2
The lakes played a bigger impact for this event b/c the water temperature was still very warm... I'd guess like 60 degree's. Also, there was very little wind for most of the event to help stir that warm air emitting from the lake away. Combine that with the marginal surface temps in general... just a 1 or 2 degree bump from the warm lake water near the shore would have and did kill accumulations.
