Heres a quick lesson in meteorology 101. The Lakes modify every single arctic air mass. More cloudcover and snowflakes in return for less biting cold is a common side effect, but even on those rare times when this doesn't happen, the airmass is still modified. Plus I was citing official numbers from an urban area, not the middle of nowhere. Rural areas of SE MI still got down to -15F to -20F in this Lake-modified airmass. Geoboy645
Got down to -8 here. Going to be warmer here today thanks to the small clipper coming through. After that though it looks to be back to extreme cold for the new years.
michsnowfreak
The snowy December is inching higher up into the record books in SE MI. I was slacking a bit on seeing where we stood (obviously Christmas is a busy time of year), but Detroit is already sitting at 9th snowiest December on record with 20.4". If the next few days pan out, it is very realistic to finish around 6th snowiest. Flint is already sitting at 5th snowiest December with 22.2", and a finish around 4th seems likely. https://www.weather.gov/dtx/snowdec

Best record I can find for PTK is -2° in 2000 for Dec. 27th. Pontiac got down to -10F but White Lake to -17F. White Lake will always be colder than PTK. Hoosier
ORD was sitting at +3.8F on the 25th and 2 degrees have been chopped off the departure in the past couple days. Month has a legit shot to sneak below average.

Chambana
The first 3 weeks of December were a disaster, and the last week maybe a December to remember. Dropped down to -10 Tuesday night breaking an 82 year record from 1935 (-9). Polar vortex looks to pay a visit early next week. Last nights euro run reminded me of 1/5/14. Another 1-3” of snow tomorrow evening, ready to put down a fresh blanket of snow, and let this HP do work. Have -12 in my forecast next week. Jonger
My PWS hit -13.8F. That's the lowest temp since February 2015 I believe.
cyclone77
Wouldn't be surprised if we fail to get above zero on Saturday. Several inches of very fluffy/dry snow should maximize the cold for much of the area.

I lived there for the '89 records surrounding this year's and those came with brutal NW winds. Cold is cold, but when you add 30 mph winds it's much more brutal imho.. cyclone77
Today's 2.8", and yesterday's 0.8" has resulted in a snow depth of around 5". Sure is nice to finally see relatively deep snow cover out there. Gonna be interesting to see how cold we get later this weekend. Point has -15 for both Mon and Tue. Chambana
Looking at finishing December with 4.3” of snow. First 3 weeks were a torch, and then the arctic hounds were unleashed the last 7 days. Not a hallmark month, but the last week made it better. Wish this clipper would have laid down more than a 1”, but oh well. Ready for a moisture rich storm, 4 corners, panhandle hook esque.

Snowstorms
YYZ will likely finish the month with ~15.2", which is above the average of 10.7". That makes it two years in a row now where YYZ has recorded above average snowfall for December, with 17.5" last year. Seasonal total now 15.7". IWXwx
I am going to finish the month with 9.4" of snow from 0.90" of precipitation. Pretty efficient use of precip for snow production, but total precipitation was pathetic.
hawkeye_wx
I had zero measurable snowfall this season until Christmas Eve. December will finish with 7.9", about avg for the month. 2017 finished with 32.94" of precip, which is slightly below avg.
IWXwx
Even with the lousy December, I will end up at a whopping 51.12" for the year, thanks to a 23.82" May-July.
