Funny thing is I'm like 4 miles SE of JFK and on some nights, my temps are up to 10 degrees colder than JFK and more in line with Farmingdale's. One time we even had a heavy frost in the middle of May (5/14/96) when JFK was still in the 40s and it was snowing 2-4" after severe wx in the Poconos. It was 33 here and the frost was so thick it looked like snow had fallen.

Look at West Hampton beach, a few miles can move the temp by 20+ degrees.

No I don't think so, I'm south of Southern State by about a mile JFK is slightly NW of here. Closer to Sunrise. The northern part of the airport is about the same latitude as Jamaica and Sunrise/Belt Pkwy. I spend about half my time in the Poconos (just came back from spending two weeks there) so I'm not completely familiar with local geography. We were supposed to get a big snowstorm (predicted 8 inches which was big for back then), and as soon as it started snowing, I heard a clap of thunder and saw lightning and it changed right over to rain......... What made it even worse was that the previous winter we had another 8 inch bust when it was predicted we'd get 8 inches of snow in February 1989 and all we got was 8 inches of virga- while Atlantic City got 20 inches! It was overcast all day and felt like it would snow but we never got a flake. The other "events" were very minor 1-2 inch events that occurred once a week or so. Oh, the 1-2 inches were mostly on the south shore, NYC got like T-0.5 inch in those "events" in December 1989. Personally, I don't think a disastrous 1989-90 scenario is the most likely outcome. That winter was a neutral ENSO winter. The upcoming winter will likely feature a weak La Niña. Things that could lead to such an outcome would include sustained cooler anomalies in ENSO Region 1+2 vs. ENSO Region 3.4, the development of a sustained negative PDO, a short duration for the currently forecast deep blocking episode. At last word, ENSO Region 3.4 was cooling faster than ENSO Region 1+2 (still somewhat of relatively cooler anomaly for Regin 1+2), the PDO was neutral to slightly positive, and the deep blocking was forecast to be of a longer-duration than in December 1989. Long-duration strong blocking episodes in December can signal a blocky winter. Right now, I believe a scenario closer to 2000-01 (with 2010-11 on the proverbial table) appears more likely than one resembling 1989-90.

Don, I think our climate has changed drastically from the late 80s to now. Warmer months but also more significantly more precip. I think the dry/cold monthly pattern has become extremely rare since then. It can be dry and cold over timeframes of a week or two, but if the month averages out significantly below normal temp, it's very likely to have above normal snowfall. I believe our snowfall this winter will be above average (likely somewhere between 30"-35" for NYC and EWR) including in interior sections of the region. November rarely produces snow for us anyway so it's better to get the dryness out of our hair now. In this current era, dry periods like this have snapped back to produce very wet periods soon after. donsutherland1
November will likely finish with temperature anomalies of 1.0° to 1.3° below normal across the New York City Metro area and adjacent locations. So it will wind up being a solidly below normal month, even as it wasn't exceptionally cold overall. Despite the still warm outlook on the CFSv2, the probability of a colder than normal December in the eastern third of the U.S. has increased. Usually it gets more skillful in the closing days of the month, but I think this is a case where it is lost in the East. The West should be warm given the pattern that is likely to develop. Perhaps I'll be wrong, but with an extended duration PNA-AO block, I'm feeling pretty confident about December's outcome in the East. The recent runs of the EPS have reinforced that confidence. A big pattern change to colder weather is coming near the end of the first week of December or just after it, and it's probably the type of regime that can be sustained for multiple weeks.
