I made a short list of my favorite non-snow non-tropical synoptic storms and it's right up there with Sandy, December 1992, Perfect Storm (October 1991). Do you remember the December 1992 storm or October 1991? Funny thing about October 1991 was that event was also preceded by a snowstorm in Minnesota and there was a tropical system involved that did not make landfall but gave some of its energy to a developing coastal storm, like this one did. This one had much more rain than that one, while that one had stronger winds. You would have absolutely loved both 1992-93 and 1993-94, 1992-93 for two of the most intense, high impact storms we've ever experienced to bookend the winter, and 1993-94 for the frequent storms and historic cold that we had. Those years get lost because of the recent action we've had, but they were two of the best back to back storm seasons our area has ever had. I was born in 85' so I was a little young in the early 90's. My first real recollection of extreme weather was 96', but I do vaguely remember Andrew, although that obviously didn't have any local impacts. Besides in the heart of winter everyone would have gotten at least a few inches of snow before any mix or changeover. I could see a scenario where, if a deep enough layer of cold air was entrenched over the region, that it would go from snow to sleet and freezing rain at the end without actually changing to plain rain (except maybe the east end of the island.) Sort of like the Valentines Day storm from 2007. Trust me, the place would have been unbearable as posters like UlsterCountySnowz posted pictures of a 2-3 feet on the ground while the South shore was stuck in the 40's with heavy rain. Certain locales on the North shore could have done reasonably well though.

No- we had some very boring seasons in the late 80s and early 90s (not much tropical action for our region either after Gloria in 85, besides Bob in 1991, but that one just skirted our region and hit eastern NE). 1992-93 was really the first exciting season we had since the mid 80s. My Wife was actually born during Gloria. My Mother in law always tells the story about how she was going into labor as a hurricane was approaching and freaking out about how she was going to get to the hospital. The most exciting weather period of my life was from 2009 until the end of 2012. So many favorite storms during that period, although 96' remains my personal favorite snow wise. But they usually didn't work out for anyone I started traveling to NW NJ and NE PA during the late 80s when I was in HS and it was common to see bare ground in January. The typical type of storm back then was something like the city and Long Island getting 1-3/2-4 inches of snow before it changed over to rain and all melted quickly, and inland NJ and NE PA getting 5-8 inches of snow and then it changed to freezing rain, and then a warm up a couple of days later and it was all gone (which is definitely better than what the coast was getting, which is why we started going inland in the first place.) Anything more than 4 inches for the coast from a single storm was pretty rare back then. Didn't get a single 6 inch storm in the city or long island for a few years. The pattern repeated itself in the late 90s.

Everyone was freaked out because the media made it seem like our world was about to end, we had round the clock coverage of Gloria and big hype about being hit by a 130 mph monster, the second coming of the 1938 hurricane, except further west. Days of rainfall leading up to it too, which got people caught up in the hype. It was a historic storm in that we don't get Cat 1 hurricanes making landfall up here except around once a decade or so, but not the Cat 3/4 monster everyone feared. And the backside never materialized, once the skies cleared, it just went back to a regular gusty fall day. We did get half a foot of rain out of it, which was a pretty big deal, even if the big 100+ mph winds never materialized. Same here about 2009 (Dec 2009 snowstorm) to 2012 (Sandy). That was probably the closest we are likely to get to 1960s extreme (something I wasn't around to experience lol) with all the snowstorms, hurricanes, severe weather, big heat, etc., that we experienced. 1995-96 was my favorite all time winter though and the first one in which I started keeping consistent snowfall records (about 85 inches here- all time record.) For some reason, when we had that positive bust of a snowfall in November (3-5 inches) when we weren't supposed to get any accumulations, I felt that we were in for something special and decided to start measuring snowfall that season right from the gitgo right up through the nice April snowstorm surprise that closed out the season. March 2010 was 6 hours of insanity in Long Beach with much of town losing power for days, and downed trees everywhere. Yesterday was nothing like that. Driving through town this morning, there were loose items blowing around, but besides that no damage. My power flickered a few times but never went out. The bay was higher than normal but no flooding outside of the normally vulnerable spots. It was a fairly run of the mill Nor’easter by me. The rain was welcome since we’ve been dry for months. Yeah it was fun to track yesterday and I liked following the heavy bands of rain and where they set up, the rapid pressure fall and even experiencing that pseudo-eye-feature last night. The biggest thing I remember about March 2010 was all the transformers that blew (in hindsight, years later, it almost feels like it was a mini-Sandy with how many power outages we had and the high winds, though we did have much more rain in March 2010.) December 1992 and March 2010 are my top two rainy/windy noreasters.

I had just gotten my first digital thermometer and was keeping track of temps as they fell while it was still raining, and after midnight, when it was around 35 degrees and I heard pinging, I was convinced that we would wake up to a nice surprise the next morning. And we did- got our first accumulating snow in November since 1989!

Wow that was the same year that we had remnants of Opal that caused severe wx up here and later on in November we had that surprise snowstorm at the tail end of a cold front. Was that on the same level as March 2010? I wish I remembered that event better, but I do recall we had severe wx type damage.

Yeah, I kept some incomplete records in 1993-94 too (moreso of temps than snowfall, but I did snowfall records where I could, it was kind of difficult sometimes because we had so many sleet/ice events in 1993-94. I loved the two big thundersnow events in Feb 1994, but I also loved the big ice storm in Jan that dumped an unbelievable two inches of ice......saving grace was that it happened close to a weekend lol. That was another special season that got started off right with a surprise snowstorm in December.)
