HKY_WX
If this makes Landfall in the Keys, it could likely go down as one of the top 3 strongest Canes to hit the united states. Ponder that for a moment. I will bring the list back out after posting it yesterday. Rank Hurricane Season Landfall pressure1 "Labor Day" 1935 892 mbar (hPa) 2 Camille 1969 900 mbar (hPa) 3 Katrina 2005 920 mbar (hPa) 4 Andrew 1992 922 mbar (hPa) 5 "Indianola" 1886 925 mbar (hPa) 6 "Florida Keys" 1919 927 mbar (hPa) 7 "Okeechobee" 1928 929 mbar (hPa) 8 "Great Miami" 1926 930 mbar (hPa) 9 Donna 1960 930 mbar (hPa) 10 Carla 1961 931 mbar (hPa) Source: HURDAT,[1] Hurricane Research Division[2]
superjames1992
If I recall right, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane was a category 5 hurricane (peaking at 185 MPH sustained winds) within 24-36 hours after first becoming a category 1 hurricane. It certainly doesn't take long for rapid intensification to happen if the ingredients are right.

Yea, the gfs had it threatening Camille/Labor Day on the 12z run (mid 890's). I think 200-300mb shear from the SW will limit it at some point, but through 18z tomorrow, you would think there is no bottom to this thing. Tampa better pray to god this sneaks into the coastline south of there. Holy s### if it doesn't. Some of the keys will never be the same, which sadness me as I was there w/ my Fiance in April and they're my favorite place on earth.

It's like spinning a coin. Only other time i've seen it was during wilma. Will likely only last until an ERC. Usually only happens during bouts of intense RIC w/ a small pinhole eye. Very strange to see on Satellite.

Probably just clearing out the eye (at the upper levels) from the earlier eyewall reconstruction...(or quasi replacement)

HKY_WX
NE eyewall continues to strengthen. Checkout the echo tops loop on GRL3 if you have it. There's got to be some strong Cat 4 maybe 5 winds in that band now.
