Juliancolton
I always love reading the ice reports from the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club (http://www.hriyc.org/current.html). Today's discussion was particularly detailed, not to mention optimistic about a winter reload toward the end of the month. They actually seem hopeful that the upcoming mild wx will improve conditions for them in the long run. If the ice is really a foot thick up by Barrytown, I'm definitely gonna make my way up there early this week to stroll atop the river for a while. Suspect the angle of cold air will favor the deep valley locations in the morning. Honestly...sorta of a bummer I did not get below zero this morning for a low. Impressive cold snap for sure...but not near my all time record low of -12 F a few years back. If the winds slow down...maybe Walpack or Sussex get cold. Our main Lake in Highland Lakes...I saw 5 ice vessels on the lake today. There is a medium group of people that have boats with skates/sails/ Told my wife...these are the people that appreciate winter and wind/boating. I heard the ice on the lake near me is 20 inches deep.

Been up there a few times. Walpack and the valley locations may get to double digits below zero if the winds calm down.

CPcantmeasuresnow
Didn't make double digits below zero here, -6 was the best we could do. Not even that close to my lows from 2 and 3 winters ago.

Juliancolton
We got an awesome Landsat pass over the area yesterday if anyone's interested in exploring the local snowcover/ice... there's a lot of detail. I think it's cool seeing the cutoff around Staatsburg where the Hudson goes from solid pack ice to more scattered floes. https://re.ssec.wisc.edu/s/4GQrr
Northwest NJ
Walpack, NJ near the Delaware River in Sussex County how a low temperature of -16 this morning. I pass the Delaware River by The Dingman's Bridge or Milford Bridge about twice a month but haven't been there in two weeks I would love to see the ice coverage on the river. Yep, it felt totally balmy this morning. I was down at Plum Point in New Windsor this morning and the river appears to be frozen solid even that far south now. Sunrise was a bust, but I had fun watching a big barge get stuck in the ice as its two tugs and a dinky little CG ship tried cutting circles around it to free it. Looking at Vesselfinder, it seems like there are at least two more barges locked in off Kingston at the moment. Mayhem on the river.
IrishRob17
I don't believe that I've had any record lows IMBY during this stretch (need to confirm) but it will go down as the longest stretch of temperatures below freezing since I moved here in May 2005 at 14 days. The previous record here of below freezing temperatures was 8 days, 2/3/07-2/10/07.
CPcantmeasuresnow
Just wondering if anyone received any measurable snow yesterday. I wasn't home but did measure 0.3 inches when I got home last night. It all counts.

West Point, NY
Saturday we ice.... Low level cold gets in here quicker than modeled as 2nd low scoots off SNJ instead of over us. Any further SE we ice and plow.

Juliancolton
Preliminary peak of 49F here. Nearly a 70 degree increase in four days... not sure why some folks in the main threads are calling it a busted thaw. It's a major shock to the system. Probably because they don’t know what a thaw is...it is above freezing, well above freezing, and the snow is melting, no bust about that IMO. Of course with some of the legit torches we’ve had in recent years has set the bar high too I suppose.
gravitylover
Boy it's gross out there. 50+ is nice but it's soggy and foggy and tough driving with all the water on the road, branches flying in the wind and rocks falling out of hillsides and rolling into the roads.
