That's insane to think about.  Crazy how I remember it being an especially warm summer, meanwhile it got off to a cool(er) start.

i thought we would roast after june 2008 but the extreme heat pattern never came back

last year we had 1 by this point and the season finished with 40

Last summer was to backloaded heat what many of our recent winters have been to backloaded snow. It was the 3rd highest amount of 90 degree days from July 1st on.

Newark 90 degree days from July 1st on:

#1...2010...38

#2...1993...37

#3...2016...34

the summer of 1976 started with a warm June...April set all time heat records...The rest of the summer was generally cool...2002 was similar but the summer turned out hot...

The big story of the 70's was that the heatwaves had no lasting power. Even the famous summer of 77 only had a single 10 day hot stretch that it's remembered for.

It was an impressive heatwave during those 10 days back in July 1977. That old Belvedere Castle observing site in Central Park was the hottest around beating EWR and LGA.

Max temp July 1977 heatwave...NYC...104...LGA....99....EWR....102

They are not.  We are receiving a heavy downpour out here in Bethlehem, PA right now.  There is lightning with these which is all up in the clouds - no ground strikes - so far.  No wind gusts to speak of with it either.  0.28" in the rain gauge in the past 15 minutes.  Not sure whether these will get to you folks around NY metro or if they will stay to the north and west.

it looks like NYC will end up averaging 72.0 for June...Newark should be 72.7...LGA at 73.5...The departure from average is...

Central Park...+0.1

Newark............-0.3

LGA................+1.2

NYC ended up averaging 72.0...1981-2010 average is 71.9...since 1980 it's 72.0...Newark ends up at 72.7...-0.3 from average...LGA comes in at 73.6...+1.2...
