Central Park used to tie or beat LGA routinely in the number of 90s days until the 2000s where they started looking more like JFK, which is absurd. The park's location and current overgrowth make it completely unreliable.

This is what moving the NYC ASOS out of direct sunlight into the shade did to the number of 90 degree days compared to LGA since the 1980's.

That's incredible bluewave. I appreciate your info. Do you mind posting the changes at JFK and EWR as well for the same time periods?

So was it in 1996 that they moved the NYC obs from the top of the castle to the New ASOS? I can remember the news at some point in the 90's when they used LGA obs instead of NYC while the new station was being put in.

Expand

I think it was January 96 when they used the Lga obs and February the ASOS was in but I'm not sure

From what I see, the NWS next year is eliminating the term 'blizzard watch'.

Not a bad idea.  I would also like to see ice storm warning changed to freezing rain warning.  It sounds very amateur and elementary like something a member of the general public would say.  It would be like saying snowstorm warning

Freezing rain advisory is going to be known as a winter weather advisory.

I'd like to see them bring back the "Heavy snow warning and watches" that they discontinued some years ago...Are they just going to use "Winter storm warning" for everything now?

Winter Weather Advisory, Winter Storm Watch, Winter Storm Warning, Blizzard Warning, Ice Storm Warning.

They are dumbing it down bc the general public is dumb.

I think the word blizzard gets thrown around to much...the qualification for a blizzard should be upgraded...It used to be 20 degrees or lower for a real blizzard...

I agree, and from what I've seen at least, most of the general public thinks that a blizzard automatically means big snow totals.

It's really hard to get temps that cold around here. I think snow rates/visibility and winds should be enough to qualify. Or maybe they say anything 20s and lower? When I think blizzard I don't think pasty snow.

Maybe they should add back some type of minimum sustained because frequent gusts to 35mph sounds too easy.

Remember in the 80's when The Weather Channel would operate under green, yellow, and red codes?

Expand

Yeah, color codes are something that people can easily relate to. A yellow alert for snow could be a winter weather advisory...amber winter storm warning...red heavy snows of 12" or more.
