Tim from Springfield (IL)
Friday marks the 100th anniversary of the central Illinois outbreak which produced the long-tracked F4 tornado (from MS River to almost the IN border) that would devastate Charleston and Mattoon, IL (Coles County). This outbreak killed 108 people, mostly in Charleston-Mattoon. Commemorative page from ILX: http://www.weather.gov/ilx/26may1917 The same outbreak also produced tornadoes in Will County (destroying the town of Manhattan) and three F4's in Indiana. Hoosier
I was going to post a little something about this outbreak. That late May-early June 1917 outbreak sequence is one of the most impressive on record in the US. Here's a writeup from our own andyhb. http://www.ustornadoes.com/2017/04/26/historic-outbreak-sequences-eight-days-of-mayhem-in-late-may-and-early-june-1917/
