Notice how December has had the most top 10 record record warmth to start the winter while January showed the least. This is flipped in the summer with June having the least top 10 warmth with July the most. October is also a cooler standout compared to the rest of the year in terms of top ten warmth. It may be why we were still able to set a new October monthly snowfall record in 2011 beating 1925, 1952, and 1876. I was really surprised by that, as we had no record of accumulating October snowfall going back for many decades. I wonder if that means that one day we'll actually have a May accumulating snowfall? PS how did you like the warm finish to April? We actually tied the high on 4/16 on 4/29, as it reached 85 here on both days.

uncle W
it has a lot to do with the night time lows getting warmer faster than the day time highs...both are getting warmer...the 2010's could have the warmest minimums on average for each month...some average monthly maximums came in the 1930's, 40's and 50's...October's highest average max came in the 1940's along with decade average...the 2010's can beat the October monthly average with another torch month...

October 1962, 1972 and 1979 had a slushy accumulation on grassy surfaces in parts of the city...in 2002 I got two nights in a row of sleet that accumulated enough to measure...

batmansascientist
I thought it was interesting that Feb 2018 broke Feb 2017 record in Central Park. First time a record was set and re-set since November 1895/1896 (records only going back to 1870s).

frd
@bluewave Do you feel the general warmth and especially the warmth in the recent fall months, Sept and October mostly, has been associated with the above average SST off the East Coast and the nature of the WAR. A sort of feedback taking place possibly which also plays a role in moisture transport up along the East Coast and warmer over night lows via higher dews. Any thoughts? Thanks !
