Wow, so 1942-43 was our last truly cold winter in the sense that was the last time we had multiple outbreaks like that and the last time NYC went below -2.

Wow that's a massive ridge, somebody's seeing 90s if not multiple days of them.

Notice the ridge is centered onshore over the Carolinas? :) That's the perfect summer-time location of the ridge to get 100+ degree temps right to JFK :-)  I hope this patterns holds all summer long!  Downsloping west and northwest winds with high heat and low humidity are awesome in the summer!

About the only heat record we haven't been able to set yet is a 100 degrees in May. I guess it will eventually come since we have already done mid 90's in April on several occasions.

Heck, we haven't even gotten to 100 degrees in June or September for that matter since the 1960s.  I look back at those records from the 30s thru the 60s and wonder what had to happen for them to occur.  -15 in February 1934, 106 in July 1936, -8 in February 1943, 100 in June 1953, 101 in June 1966 (and 104 in July 1966 at JFK and 107 at LGA) and 102 in September 1954!  As a matter of fact our longest heatwave was between late August and early September in 1954!

Well Newark got its earliest 100 on record back in early June 2011 with the direct super drought heat discharge from Texas. Those late season record heat waves into early September during the 50's are one of the few heat records the 2010's haven't been able to beat yet.

Yep and I think 1965-66 was one of our driest periods so that's why the Summer of 1966 was so hot around here.  Is it going to be difficult to get heat records at Central Park now because of all this vegetation overgrowth?  People don't really seem to take Newark records seriously because they think the airport artificially heats up the sensor, but it's really the Central Park numbers which are off.

Yeah, Central Park may have come close to the 106 record set in the 1930's during July 2011 if the sensor wasn't blocked by vegetation.

Would like to see if we could rival the most consecutive days of 90 plus. Was that the heatwave from 1954? I think it is like 13 or 14 days.

I still question that location for Newark. I think the site is on a strip of grass in between 16 lanes of i95 and the EWR Tarmac.

I'm actually shocked that the 107 at LGA from July 1966 wasn't broken but I was glad to see that Newark finally got past the 105 barrier (with a bullet- right to 108!)

Yeah, the winds weren't quite rite for LGA on 7-22-11 with some flow having a short path over the water. More of a SW flow may have come close to the 107.

That would have killed JFK though :P  We came close here on the south shore, I hit 103.0 and JFK hit 103 also, one off the 104 from July 1966.

It reminds me of early season snowstorms, when a north wind actually keeps LGA slightly above freezing, while JFK is colder (like the November 2012 snowstorm when we got close to 8" in Nassau County.)

Funny thing about July 1966, even with the severe drought, Central Park lagged behind LGA and JFK, 4 degrees cooler than LGA and 1 degree cooler than JFK, NYC "only" hit 103.

I remember you mentioning the 100 degree readings in July 2010 the other day when the wind shifted offshore and even briefly NE. Check out the brief temperature surge at Gilgo Beach when the winds went N and then NE.  I have seen temperature jumps over 100 degrees in Long Beach several times on a hot offshore flow day like that. But never quite that high.

Wow, it actually hit 106.3 at 12:15 PM?!  With a NE wind at 13 mph.  The sand there must've caused first degree burns for anyone unlucky enough to be on it.

and that page has been viewed 100 times since April 1, 2017 lol.

The old CedarCreek, Wantagh coop that was replaced with the mesonet had a similar brief warm surge to 107 on that day. I never even knew that site existed. But when I drove by the new mesonet the old instrument shelter and rain gauge was still there just across the road.

Almanac for WANTAGH CEDAR CREEK, NY

Do you think these records will be considered official?  Too bad we didn't have the mesonet back then.

That streak in 1999 didn't even have the hottest temps- which were near July 4th weekend when we hit 101 on back to back days.

Look at how 1944 and 2002 both had multiple long streaks (and there is the 11 year pattern showing itself again.)

Was it in 1966 that JFK hit 100+ on 4 consecutive days?  I know EWR hit 100+ 5 times in a row in 1993 (including 105 twice) and 9 times in total that summer.

Queens College mesonet station now online. It's a higher rooftop sensor so there will be some temperature variability from the surface depending on the weather conditions. Good spot to catch some higher wind gusts. The webcam view is fantastic looking toward Manhattan.

Late August into early September 1953 is still the king of all late season heat waves. It's one of the few heat records which the 2010's haven't been able to beat yet.

Yeah, several daily record highs and the +5 September. But we still haven't been able to join the 100 degree after 8-25 club since 1993. Only 4 years of 100 degree or greater readings this late in 1948, 1953, 1973, and 1993.

could more moisture be lowering the chances to get that hot that late? our recent hot september days were also humid
