Mesoscale Discussion 0621
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1059 AM CDT Mon May 01 2017

Areas affected...eastern Ohio...West Virginia through western
   Pennsylvania

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely

   Valid 011559Z - 011800Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent

SUMMARY...Thunderstorms are expected to undergo a gradual increase
in coverage and intensity into the afternoon from eastern portions
of Ohio through West Virginia into western Pennsylvania. Damaging
wind and a few tornadoes will be the main threats. A tornado watch
will likely be needed by 17Z.

DISCUSSION...As of mid day storms have shown some increase in
intensity and organization over southeast OH. This activity is
developing along a cold front that stretches from the Great Lakes
through eastern OH into eastern KY. The downstream warm sector is
only weakly capped but marginally unstable. However trends in
visible imagery show numerous cloud breaks, and the boundary layer
should undergo destabilization next few hours supporting 500-1000
J/kg MLCAPE. Very strong deep layer winds will persist in this
region as a mid-level jet coupled with a strong low-level jet within
eastern periphery of the upper low circulation shifts northeast
during the day. Latest VWP data show 70 kt surface to 6 km shear and
large 0-1 km hodographs. This high shear-low CAPE environment will
support organized structures with mixed storm modes including bowing
line segments and supercells as activity develops east through the
   destabilizing warm sector.

Looks like I might be driving through this on the way home possibly, going to be close if it makes it through before or not. No tornadoes yet, and hopefully it stays that way. I was driving home from work in 2011 when the tornado hit hempfield area. I was NE of the actual tornado, but the storm was so intense with wind, lightening strikes and pouring rain I couldn't see 2 feet in front of me, all the while my phone kept going off with weather alerts. Most intense storm I was ever outside of a building for and could do without that experience again lol.

Wow!  Incredible wind driven rain in gusts for about 15 to 20 minutes.  Felt like the glass was going to push in on the back door.   0.74" of rain in 30 minutes.  Just a few claps of thunder.

You could clearly see the rotation signal embedded on the super res velocity.  It started up around New Castle and headed NE.

I anticipated the Thunder \ Lightening to be worse. While the line was in Western OH seems like there was a lot of hits on the lightening tracker. We are probably lucky this didn't come though later with a few more hours of sun to to destabilize everything.

I think we might had quite an few spin up tornadoes today, The damage picture is from Plum, might be a brief but strong tornado. During the Butler/Armstrong County warned storm radar did have an debris ball on it. I think i saw spin up tornado from an friends house watching the storm, over on the hills near Tarentum. Good severe weather day, and was quite widespread wind damage day

Well, looks like a pretty raw weekend on tap...

NWS thinking some areas could see snow...

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Unsettled weather and below normal temperatures will continue
over the weekend and into next week as ridging builds over the
central states and an omega block takes shape. Precipitation
will become more showery in nature as the low slowly migrates
over the forecast area...which now looks to be late Friday /
Saturday. With the upper low over the region through the
weekend... cool temperatures at least scattered showers will
persist. Looking at analogs there stands to be a decent chance
for snow to be observed given how cold the airmass is,
especially on the higher ridges. Numerous locations reporting a
trace of snow and 2 inches at Terra Alta was observed during the
best matching analog in early May. (5/7/1989)

By Monday, the low may pull away just enough to get our region
into the front side of a building Plains ridge, ending
precipitation. Below normal temperatures will continue however
as 500 mb heights remain suppressed. 3-4 standard deviations
below normal...with return intervals of 30 years.

Where was this -NAO in DJFM when it could have helped with storm chances... Now I await the frost and freeze warnings and try to cover the garden.
