For the 2010's so far, the best period for warning level events has been Jan 20-Feb 20. The OKX forecast zones had a total of 29 warning level events since 09-10.

Before Jan 20....9

Jan 20-Feb 20...15

After Feb 20.....5

Yes, and I think we've seen a move towards historic January snowfalls because January has been getting warmer.  Good side/bad side lol.  Actually the good (for now) I think trumps the bad, because the small snowfall/cold Januarys of the 80s and prior were pretty boring.

What do you think of the idea that certain patterns seem to repeat themselves (or be more likely) around certain dates, Chris?  I feel like nature is characterized by repeating patterns on both small and large scales.

Incidentally, I originally had six periods in there but cut them down to three lol- the other three were the first week of December and the third week of January and the third week of March.

Yeah, January 20th to February 20th is peak climo around NYC for the heaviest snowfall of the winter. 18 out of the 28 largest snowstorms in NYC history occurred at this time.

Yup had sleet here too in the Bronx.

Snowman19 FTL, as usual.

I hope you are enjoying your rain today and the 5 minutes of that "ripping" sleet mixed with rain you got last night. Still calling for snowstorms I see. Lol. How many times and fails is this for you now over the last few weeks? You thinking next weekend is going to be a snow event is laughable. It's April. You need 850mb to be at least -2 to -3 and 700mb to be at least -4 to -5 for snow this time of the year. And you will have to overcome major boundary layer issues. Good luck with that :-)

why are you guys so venomous at each other over this?  I think the most anyone has a reason to expect is a T of snow down near the coast.  You need an April 2003 kind of set up to get a snowstorm in early April and nothing like that seems to be in the cards.

Heck I'm the one who said the coast shouldn't be expecting HECS in March anymore either lol.

By the way, here's my definition of HECS by various months for the coast.

October 1"

November 6"

December 12"

January 18"

February 18"

March 12"

April 6"

May 1"

So basically what I'm saying is that in our current climate expecting a 1 foot snowstorm from March 1st onwards is pretty unlikely for NYC.

Chris, if you had to isolate it to a per week basis, is there anyway to calculate the top 5 weeks for metro area snowfall?

Unc, going back at the older records from the 1700s and early to mid 1800s can you come up with a reason why February might have been colder than January back then?

Sorry because I figure this must have been answered already, but did March turn out to be colder than January and Feburary after all for any of the NYC metro reporting stations?

No it was slightly warmer than January.  Boston actually had March as colder than any of the DJF months.
