That's OK. That banter thread was getting pretty hectic. It looks like NYC also has a shot to average colder than each of the winter months from March 1-20th. We should see a nice dip in the monthly avg and departure over the next week.

Monthly avg temps in NYC

Mar... 40.1...should fall several degrees over the next week

Feb.....41.6

Jan.....38.0

Dec....38.3

Why not go all the way BW and say March 1-31 :-)

It may very well. But the forecast skill really falls off after 10 days which is the last week of the month. It would be wild if March finishes colder than each of the winter months. Have to check in with Uncle to see if this is a first or not.

Yes, I want to know this also- it would be very rare.  It could easily end up being the coldest and the snowiest of them all.

Also, as a follow up- have we ever had an entire DJFM period where every month averaged 38 degrees or warmer?

The last time that March was colder than all the winter months was 1960. But that was a much colder winter than this year was.

1960 NYC.......2017

Mar...33.3.....38.8 so far

Feb...36.3......41.6

Jan...33.9......38.0

Dec..38.4......38.3

Wow, only December is comparable to this season's weather.  There can't be many DJFM periods with each month 38 or wamer.

The only other time March was cold following such a warm winter was way back in 1932.

1948-49 had all four months 38.0 or higher...it ended up with 47" of snow...one 16-19" storm on 12/19...8-10" on 2/28...

Once the final snowfall tally is in for this month, it will be yet another extreme for what was usually expected in March following such a warm winter. 31-32 only finished with 5.3" on the whole season.

NYC warmest winters and March temp

01-02....41.5....44.1

15-16....41.0....48.9

Chris don't forget to add 48-49 to this list

Wow, what a strange winter, and it came right after what was then our snowiest winter on record with our biggest snowstorm (also in December) and also the winter with the most snowcover.

That was a little colder than this winter at 38.5 But it was still a top 10 warmest. There were no #1 warmest winter months like this February.

48-49 was the only winter that came close to matching what we did last winter with 40 inches of snow and 40 degree avg temp....this winter might do it for back to back years....crazy!  JFK/NYC is the new Norfolk, VA ;-)

both December storms in 1947 and 1948 had temps around 30 for most of the storm...the 1948 storm is over shadowed by the 1947 storm...Brooklyn got 19" in 1948...16-17" in Manhattan...Brooklyn got near 30" in 1947...around new years eve 1948 there was a huge rain storm with flooding that ended as 5" of snow...47 and 48 had snow on the ground Christmas and New Years day...

32" in the Dec 1947 is the highest total I could find and that's from White Plains.  That and the March 1888 blizzard really stand out (38" in Brooklyn and Queens), probably won't be seeing any big March storms anymore lol unless we have a triple phaser like 1993.  Different story for elevated and inland areas, where these late season storms are amazing.

First time in years that we are seeing this many -10 or lower departure days in a single month. Figures it would wait to get cold just as spring was starting.

1947 was big for Westchester. Mar 1960 had 28" here...that was the only other 20+ March event besides 1888.

so are a lot of crops in the south that are going through a hard freeze

You just knew something like this could happen after spring was 3 weeks early.

I wonder if this also happened in 1989-90 when we had a record warm Jan and Feb and Mar (after a record cold Dec) with those string of 80 degree days and then it cooled back down in April and we actually had a couple of inches of snow in early April 1990.

I don't remember what happened with the freeze back then. But this year is unusual in that spring came so early that the freezes are coming in March instead of April like we see sometimes. Back during the little ice age in the late 70's, it was that damaging May snowstorm to our north.

yes that May 1977 snowstorm was quite like something we'd get in the 1800s

A lot of the early blooming trees/plants here in BPC seem to have survived.  I think they were JUST late enough that more susceptible plants haven't starting blooming yet.

NYC could do it with a low before midnight and we have several more -10 or lower days coming up.
