Maybe a three "H" summer this year, if that happens I can see plenty of chances for severe weather.

Depends if we see the ring of fire with the Bermuda High develop near us or to our west.  Our hottest summers have the severe weather going off to our west as the Bermuda High backs into the NC coast and we downslope with hot W to NW winds.  Fronts then stall and die out before they get into our region.  And even if they pass through our region they are dry and temps are around 90 even after their passage (but the humidity is lower of course.)   In 1993 this happened and St Louis got record flooding while we baked in hot and dry weather with 100s right to the south shore of Long Island.  In such a pattern your best bet for severe weather actually comes in the fall when the pattern starts to break down.  Also because that's when tropical season ramps up.  In 1993 we just barely missed out on Cat 3 Hurricane Emily which was near the NC coast in Mid September (when it was still in the 90s here) and the storm veered just barely out to sea once reaching the latitude of Delaware.

Yea - getting out of the city during the summer is essential.

I bet Summers in the part of VA where you're from are awesome. Still don't understand why you'd ever leave there except maybe for work.   The money you spend on a shoebox in Manhattan could buy you a 3000 sq ft home out here 10-15 miles NW of the city.

They really are stellar - usually day time highs upper 80s/ lower 90s, lows almost always in the 50s or 60s (sometimes the valley floor will stay above 70 at night, but rarely).  You go up into the mountains and temps are in the 70s most days, with nights in the 40s/50s.   It's crazy though, you go over the mountain to CHO, lose about 1000 to 1500 feet in elevation, and you are getting into that typical SE US climate (highs in the 90s / lows in the 70s / very humid).

But yea, there isn't a whole lot of opportunities there for work, but it's great to visit (especially since there are wineries and breweries everywhere now).  We might one day move back close to there, back to DC.
