Ten inch+ storms from last 20 seasons (95/96 onward)

Last season, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Blizzard of '96. That winter launched the era of breaking all-time snowfall records, and we've now benefited from the new era with multiple records broken. In the past 20 seasons, not including this one (some of you already have experienced another 10"+ storm this season), how many 10"+ storms have impacted your location? Please include events you were out of town for.

Why 10"? It matches the KU/NESIS threshold (30 cm). I can guess for other counties for our subforum, but I'm sure I'd be missing multiple events. The goal is to create a county-by-county map- or even half-county-by-half-county like the LWX breakdowns- for our subforum to get a picture of the return period for the big-deal events.

My location: 95/96- 05/06 at Potomac, Maryland. 06/07-present at North Bethesda, Maryland.

My list:  None from 96/97 through 01/02. (1/25/00 was 9" at my location)

1) 1/96- 25"    2) PDII (02/03)- 22" for the entire period. 18.5" for the main slug.    3) 2/06- 14.5"     4)  12/09- 21"    5)  2/5-6/10- 26.5"    6) 2/9-10/10- 13.5"    7) 2/14- 14.5"    8) 1/16- 29"

That's 8 events in 20 season for an average of one 10"+ snowstorm per 2.5 seasons.

I moved to the DC area before the 04/05 winter and settled in Falls Church right before the winter of 09/10.  From your list I did not get to 10" in 2006 in Arlington (can verify the DCA measurement on that one) and didn't get there in the 2/10/10 blizzard either.

Dec. 09 - 19.0"

Feb 10 - 24.7"

Feb 14 - 13.7"

Jan 16 - 24.0"

So, maybe drop 2/10/10 from Fairfax Co. and Feb 14 and Feb 06 from the DCA area?  7 for Fairfax and 6 for Arlington on the Potomac.

edit - As a side note, in my 20 winters in the upper midwest I had 7 10"+ storms and only one 20" (I think Minneapolis is more like 9 or 10 over that span plus a 28" monster).  So, actually a similar frequency for me, but the snowier parts of the DC region do better for big storms.  Snowcover on the other hand...

Other than the usual ones mentioned previously, Jan of 87 comes to mind. It produced over a foot of wind driven powdery snow for much of the Delmarva. Forget the exact date, but it was superbowl sunday.

Of course last weeks event for lower eastern shore and southern DE. 10-14". I was in Rehoboth for that one.

eta- I obviously cant read, or count. Anyway that 87 storm was one of my favorites.

This is from the spreadsheet I keep on stats from my own backyard in Severna Park since the 2001/ 2002 season:

02/16/2003 - 26"

02/18/2006 - 12"

12/19/2009 -22.5"

02/06/2010 - 29"

02/10/2010 - 14"

02/13/2014 - 12"

03/17/2014 -10"

01/23/2016 - 25"

Other notable storms under 10"

02/7/2003 - 7"

12/06/2003 - 6"

02/24/2005 - 6"

03/02/2009 - 7"

01/30/2010 - 8.5"

01/26/2011 - 7"

01/21/2014 - 7"

03/05/2015 - 6.25"

Moved here from the DC 'burbs in August 2006.  Since then I have measured these:

1/22-23/2016: 35.3"
2/12-13/2014:  13.5"
2/9-10/2010:  18.5"
2/5-6/2010:  28.5"
12/18-19/2009:  18.8"

Prior to that, dating back to 1996, as best I can re-create from local records:

2/12-13/2006:  12.1"
2/15-18/2003: 24.7"
1/25-26/2000:  14.1"
3/14-15/1999:  13.6"
1/6-8/1996:  30.2"

interesting that the average of these 10"+ events is actually over 20"

I know DCA didn't hit 10" in 1/25/00, but we might be able to add one back for at least Fairfax county given LWX's snow map created by Watson back in the day...maybe Arlington too?

Yeah, looks good.  Weird Montgomery Co. snow hole.

I lived in Carney, MD for most of my life which is to the north of Baltimore. I've seen quite a few 10"+ storms there. Very recently, I've lived in Hagerstown and now in Germantown. I'll list from each location what the totals were.

Carney, MD

1/96 - 24.0" - Father measured. I was 5 years old.

1/00 - 12.3" - Father measured

2/03 - 30.4"

2/06 - 19.8"

12/09 - 20.5"

2/5-6/10 - 32.5"

2/9-10/10 - 18.4"

2/13 - 19.5" - Father measured. Was at school in PA.

1/16 - 29.7" - Father measured. Was in Hagerstown

Hagerstown, MD

1/16 - 36" - Measured by neighbor and confirmed by PNS report down road.

Germantown, MD

1/16 - 33.5" - Measured at work

Other notable storms I've seen were Late January 2010 in Ocean City (12.4") and went to Boston for 2/13-14/13 (Nemo storm - 32.0") I've lived a crazy, snow filled life so far. Here's to more in the future!

Of the four winters I've been here in Prince Frederick I've only had one 10+" storm, which was 15.5" in the HECS last January. I've had a lot of 6-7" events though. Before 13/14 I lived in Glen Burnie so I just followed BWI.

This would be a good thread to ask- does anyone have snow maps for the events in 13/14? I wasn't here for some of that winter and wanted to use them to complete my records. LWX used to keep PNS maps up for years but they only go back about a year now.

You mean the St. Paddy's day storm of 2014? Wow, 10"! If that's a widespread number for AA County, it helps that part of the region to be among the winners for 10"+ storms in the past 20 seasons. Because, to your 8 events, we can add 1/96 and 1/00 for sure to make 10 events. And then 2/96 was 10"+ for Odenton and Millersville, it looks like. So, that's potentially 11 events for your neck of the woods vs. 8 for lower Montgomery County.

Wasn't there a pretty significant snow in Feb '96? Maybe it was a coastal scrape. Does anyone on Delmarva remember? I think we got over a foot drawn out over two days.

Edit

it was feb 2-3 1996. Found it on Ray Martin's site.  Awesome site btw. Looks like D.C. Got 8-10" but just south and east did well.

There was a write up about it on the old LWX historic winters page but I think that was taken down. I had pasted the text somewhere in the Lower Eastern Shore thread but I don't remember where it is.

Cool thanks. I know that southern and coastal areas did better from that storm than the big blizzard in Jan. Luckily I was up in north Jersey visiting family for the Jan blizzard that year. Best of both worlds I suppose. It remains the only time I saw thunder snow.

Front Royal VA:

1/96:  37"

2/03:  21" (both events)

12/09:  21"

2/6/10:  27"

Stephens City, VA:

3/13:  10"

2/14:  14"

1/16:  28"

It looks like you just missed 10" in 12/03 and were too far south for 3/14-15/99. Man, you've really had back luck in that even the western storms didn't perform for you.

Under-performance in storms is perpetual out here, unless you get north of Winchester.  Now, if you're talking about drought, heat, and wind, then you can expect over-performance.

I lived in the Capitol Hill neghborhood of DC from 2001-2009, and have been on the MD northwest side of town since 2009 (Silver Spring/Chevy Chase area). The 10"+ storms I got in that peroiod probably match what everyone else listed, but here you go:

Feb. 16-17, 2003 (Cap Hill)...~18", kind of an unofficial measurement, wasn't being overly precise. Probably 3-4" of that was sleet. This was PD-II of course.

Dec. 18-19, 2009 (SS/CC)... 20.0"

Feb. 5-6, 2010 (SS/CC)... 23.5". Snowmageddon.

Feb. 9-10, 2010 (SS/CC)... 12.0". Hard to measure, true blizzard conditions on the 10th.

Feb. 12-13, 2014 (SS/CC)... 14.0". 12" overnight, another 2" from upper level low after hours of drizzle in-between.

Jan. 22-23, 2016(SS/CC)...24.0". Blizzard of 2016.

Notable close calls:

Feb. 11-12, 2006 (Cap Hill)... ~8.5". Not precise. All melted with 60 degree torch the following week. Event was better for those farther north.

Mar. 16-17, 2014 (SS/CC)... 8.0", St.  Pat's Day snow!

That Feb 2014 total is amazing, especially when you consider it is spitting distance from the Feb 10s and bigger than Dec 09.
